I KNOW I KNOW.. you know there is a god.
Does that take away your ability to ponder what if there wasnt?
If you CAN do that.. please answer the question. If you cant, then this question is beyond you.
What if there was no god. And you could KNOW this?
The entire premise of the question is thus. I KNOW YOU KNOW there is a god. I am asking you what if there wasnt.
So, given a god free existence, would you run around raping and pillaging knowing that there was no afterlife punishment in store for you? Would you be a jerk to others? How would your life change?

Fruitcake, what YOU dont realize is that people existed and had successful societies before christianity.
And most of the laws of christianity where shaped by the laws of those already in power.
These laws against murder and theft for example DID NOT begin with christianity.

They're not allowed to think in possibilities or "what if?", the brainwashing will kick in and it makes their brains hurt.

OK. You are an atheist and you are a good, moral person. What you don't realize is that you are a product of Christianity, even tho you don't believe in it. Our society's laws, values, and institutions are, if not based on, are heavily influenced by the Christian tradition. So, you are a product of your environment and have been shaped by Christianity to a good extent. If there were no God, our society would be more evil than it is now. And we would be a product of that society. So, the answer is yes and no.
Followup: I have pasted an answer to one of my questions (Prez) that explains what I'm trying to say.
Christianity has had a very positive impact on the world. I seem to recall that D. James Kennedy has written a book entitled _What if Jesus Had Never Been Born?" outlining some of the ways Christianity has made a positive impact on the world.
I can think of several ways. If you aren't Roman now, you have civil rights. Christianity eventually helped do away with slavery, btw.
Roman officials used to throw criminals and political dissidents to the lions and other animals. I have heard they had exotic animals like cheetas trained to rape women and all kinds of bizaar animals. People would watch such barbarity for fun. They also had gladiators, slaves who fought, and sometimes killed each other.
Christians would go into villages that had plagues and take care of the people. Hospitals eventually were developed by Christians.
Plus, the presence of Christianity on this planet is a barrier against Islam. If all the nations were pagan, Islam would probably have a much stronger chance of spreading.
Not to mention the fact that there was spiritual darkness in most nations, with people worshipping rocks, wood, and metal objects without having much knowledge of the one true God or His commandments.

I have been a Christian long enough that I have been made a new creature and even if I found out at this point there was no God, I wouldnt rape and pillage because I am not that person. Im not saying Im perfect because im not, but those are serious evils. I dont refrain from commiting those acts because I am afraid of God. I dont do it because Christ has made me a new creature as He promised in the bible that He would. like Paul said Im not there yet. Long way to go, but im not a rapist or pillager.

you seem to forget that there are plenty of people out there that do not believe in god.
do you see atheists running around raping and pillaging just because they have no spiritual belief? i do not think that you do.
the way we behave is governed by human nature and not all of that is bad. not by the fear of eternity in hell.
i personally think that if it was conclusively shown that god did not exist, we would be a less divided people and ultimately a more peaceful civilization.
after all what else divides us as much as religion? apart from race. but religion even causes division within a race.
i do not think you question is valid because there are already so many examples in the world of the answer that you seek.

Well, I would be rather cynical and depressed. After all, I would have no purpose in life, and, no matter what I do, it wouldn't matter becuase I would be just another speck in the universe. And Christians themselves know that Christianity did not appear until Jesus was crucified. They believe that God revealed himself to Adam and Eve, and Noah, and Moses, forming the Jewish religion. When the Jews turned from him, God moved on to the Gentiles. So they account for the beginning of time.

I am always amazed when so many Christians tell me if there was no god that they would go out and kill people. Is there something about Christianity that leads to such immorality?

My behavior probably wouldn't change much at all. I treat others how I want to be treated. Life without God doesn't mean life without morals or ethics.

Well, not, not rape and stuff like that, but I would be more relaxed about my actions. Actually, I already am, since THERE IS NO GOD!

Of course. If you could rape and kill and get away with it with no Jesus to torture you for it, why wouldn't you. All of us Christians would rape and kill if we thought we could get away with it but Jesus won't let us.

there was a time, before i received Jesus, that I was a mean, obnoxious jerk,
Jesus not only changed my life, he changed my personality.
