My friends dad is bipolar. We are best friends and have been for a while but now his family is moving and leaving his dad behind. His dad will seek no treatment and just gets worse and worse. He has hit my friend before ive seen him do it. His mom wont press charges. I dont know what I should do. Should I approach his dad or just back off and let my friend move away?

Hey...this situation sounds very confusing. I can understand that you want to do something but that is probally the worst thing to do. As hard as it is for me to tell you this..I think you should let the friend move away..but you never know..his dad could change..you just have to hope and pray and wish for the best, and as much as you and im sure other ppl are going to miss him maybe that was in the cards for him..thats what God has planned for him. Listen to what the other ppl have to say too, they sound smart. Just let each day happen, and you never know what might happen. Good luck to you and your friend! <3

Bipolar is a treatable condition. The fact he knows his condition but still refuses treatment is not uncommon. Bipolar means they have really good feeling days and some really depressed days. The treatment kind of evens them out so they don't have such huge mood swings. Sometimes people refuse treatment on purpose because they would rather have those days of feeling really good instead of every day being kind of blah all the time. It sounds like the circumstances you described are beyond your control or ability to change. Sad as the situation is, it is that family's problem to handle. That being said, if you witnessed an assault on a minor, you should report it to an adult or other authority.

Tell your friend to locate a bipolar website and read about it or better yet go to hospital or somewhere to find out about bipolar disorder. Get the info and give it to your friend. Get couseling and ask the couselor how to proceed. or how to get help for his dad. tell him to ask his dad get help or go to jail the next time you hit me or anyone else. Go to the police station and ask them what to do or if there is something or some way to get the dad to go. I think if the best friend gets the police on his side and tells the dad if he doesn't get help he is going to press charges, this may wake the dad up and get help before he is a criminal. Well... I think it's best if they were both to move out... they'll be better off with that dude that is making their life a living hell....
I don't think it's such a good idea to go talk to the dad... the dude seems as if he needs some sort of help...
The Mom is better off without him.. and your friend is too.... I mean.. if he is moving far,.. i'm sure you'll miss him but don't you think it's better for him not to suffer under the Dad's illness?
It's actually a great thing they're moving out!....
Talk to your friend... tell him you're there for him.. and i'm sure you'll see eachother... not as often but i believe it's best for them to fly away from that guy!

Why would you approach his dad? So you can get hit too?
If its safer for your friend to move, thats the best decision. I hope you guys can keep in touch and still get together some!

You are not going to be able to change anything. The best thing is for your friend to move away so that he doesn't have to be in that environment. Get his mailing and email addresses and keep in touch with him. Even ask your parents if he can come visit from time to time.

well...it's good that you're a good friend and want to help him..but..since him and his mom ARE leaving his dad...maybe..you should just let it go...because..it will all be done and over with once they're away from his dad..

well for starters it really isnt your place to step in but if you want to help your friend then report it to social services.....and no matter how sick his dad is he has no right to hit his son....
