For a couple of moments I had to wonder, "Who's birthday is this person talking about?" It wasn't until I read the replies that I realized you were talking about statehood. Anyhow, I recently came across an article in either the local newspaper or Honolulu magazine that there should be a celebration, but it has to take into consideration the opposition many native Hawaiians feel towards annexation and statehood.

Since I annually spend that weekend at a Hawaiian temple praying for unity of the Hawaiian people, I guess I would miss any planned festivities on Oahu anyway, but I do hope you have a happy birthday wherever you decide to be!

Even if Honolulu was planning a celebration for 2009, we (the public) wouldn't know about it yet. That's 2 years ago and a whole new administration away.
Besides, even if Honolulu were to plan a party, there would an accompanying protest from all of those people here that believe we shouldn't be a state at all!
My advice......plan to come anyway........even if there isn't a big party for the state......what better place to celebrate your birthday!

I think that sounds like a great idea! I'm sure Hawaii will have some celebration planned in Honolulu for their 50th. Even if they don't, you'd still have a great time.
