They are prone to quite a few health problems, but they have really good temperaments. The only down side of the breed is that they shed every day of their lives.

Truthfully, there is more variation in temperament within a breed than across breeds.

In other words, a hyper Pug has more in common with a hyper Golden than with a shy Pug.

If you are looking for a family dog where temperament is a question, it is always a gamble with dogs under 3 years of age. Problems like aggression or severe timidity can surface for the very first time as late as the 3rd year.

Pugs don't do well with a lot of activity, as they are brachycephalic (smooshed-face) dogs. They have trouble breathing and are sensitive to heat, including heat generated from being active.

My best suggestion is to adopt a dog that is 3-4 yrs old from a reputable rescue. A good rescue will help you find the perfect match for your family, whereas a breeder will find the perfect way to convince you to buy their pup!

Happy hunting!

Pugs have a lot of health problems, mainly eye and breathing problems. They have an excellent temperament. A friend of mine has one and he is a very funny, cute and loving little guy. He is very healthy but snores a lot. They are very prone to becoming overweight so you will probably need to talk to the breeder or your vet about how much and what to feed your dog. Innova is a really good brand and I recommend it 100%. They can be active or they can be lazy. They need a 30 minute walk every day or two and shed a LOT. They are fairly fast learners but my friends' Pug was hard to housebreak.

You MUST buy your Pug from a REPUTABLE breeder who screens their dogs of all hereditary diseases.

Pugs do have a lot of issues:

luxating patella, progressive retinal atrophy, pigmentary keratitis, elongated soft pallet, stenotic nares, pug dog encephalitis, epilepsy, general nerve degeneration...

Because of their short snout they can easily become overheated, in hot, humid weather especially.

I'm sure there are more. As with any breed that becomes very popular, irresponsible people breed their dogs without testing for genetic diseases and said diseases become rampant within the breed. If you want a pug, go to a responsible breeder who can show you the health certifications of both the ***** and sire. Don't look for a bargain dog. You have to pay for quality.

Temperament:
They are perky, rambunctious and loyal, affectionate and loving, with a happy disposition. They are playful and charming. Clever and mischievous - with a heart-winning personality. They can be a bit willful. Highly intelligent, it bores easily with repetitive training practices. Pugs are sensitive to the tone of your voice, so harsh punishment is unnecessary. The dog is neither excitable nor dull. They are good watchdogs, very devoted and are not yappers.

Health Problems:
Pugs catch colds easily and are stressed by hot and cold weather. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems. (Pugs suffer from poor ventilation.) They are not the easiest whelpers. Expect Cesarean Section if breeding. There is a chance of keratites (inflammation of the cornea) and ulcers on the cornea. The delicate eyes are prone to weeping. This breed tends to wheeze and snore, but on the whole is a very easy-care dog. Do not overfeed a Pug, as they will eat more than is good for them, quickly becoming obese and living much shorter lives. Prone to skin problems.

Pugs are great tough hardy little dogs. They some times have breathing issues due to the shape of their face. If you have kids get and research a more tolerant breed not the toys dogs or terriers as they temper up real quick.
We have golden retrievers great with kids eminently trainable and always loving...

i have two pugs, one boy one girl, they were both really healthy until about two years ago, the girl is 12 the boy is 11, both of them have dry eyes becuase they are brachiocephalic (smooshed faces). thats easy to treat with artificial tears, mine are both really fat so one has some breathing problems but if you keep their weight under control youll be fine. my boy snores a lot but my girl doesnt. they have AMAZING temperments, they get along with everyone, never bite, never snap, anything like that, great with kids. they do shed a lot so just beware. i dont know if it proven but girl pugs and black pugs tend to be a little crazy, i know my girl dog is insane and my friend has a black pug that is the same way, but overall they are sooo sweet and love to cuddle, a great choice in my mind

Love Em!! They're good natured and fun. Some may be predispositions to breathing problems. I recommend finding a good home based breeder where you can meet the parents.

pugs have a great temper, they have the ability to look at you when you talk to them like they were paying attention to you, they are energetic and sweet, but remember all dogs with short noses are prone to respiratory desease and all dogs with curled or long tails are prone to hip problems, pugs are smart and easy to house train, and they're friendly by nature... i hope this helps, for more information contact me!
