Hi,
I've used Acyclovir or brand name is Zovirax...works great but expensive. I have a friend who is a Physician's Asst. who told me to use L-lysine which is an amino acid, works fantastic against cold sores/herpes simplex. Here is a website and will tell you the dosage to take, I guarantee you, it works wonders! I don't take it regularly but have some on hand when I "feel" the cold sore coming on. You can buy it reasonably priced at Walmart.

It definitely goes away over time but if you want it to go away as soon as possible, I've found abreeva to be quite effective, but its not cheap. Its the smallest vial you've ever seen, fortunately a little goes a long way, and it's about $15. As long as you don't pick at it, it should be fine. But be warned that if this is the first day you're noticing it, it actually gets bigger as time goes on, the blisters spread and there may be some itching or tingling involved, which is why I do advise treating it to bypass all of that and not even go through it. The fact that its on your lip just draws your attention to it and causes you to want to pick at it. The abreeva will prevent it from getting any larger than it is right now and start healing it for faster recovery. And if you find yourself somewhat prone to cold sores, then I would opt for carmex or neutrogena's lip therapy as a regular lip gloss or moisturizer, because they treat cold sores as well and wearing them every once in a while even when you don't have one will prevent one from occurring.

One more note, which may be a tad bit personal or sensitive and I don't mean for it to be but I'm just being honest. As long as you are experiencing the cold sore, wash your hands frequently if you find yourself touching it. I say this because its contagious and there are incidences where touching the cold sore on your lip can transfer the infection to your genital region if the blisters break and the fluid is present on your hands.
