To show off your abs, you need to burn off the layer of fat that is covering them. To do this you need to go on a calorie restricted diet and do a lot of exercise including cardio and sit ups. The layer of fat will not go away by simply doing sit ups and crunches.

There are two factors in getting the abs to show up:

1. A low overall body fat percentage (around 10 percent for men, 16 for women)

2. Building the muscle

Low overall body fat just comes from months of strict proper diet coupled with total-body exercises. Once you are satisfied with your progress, you can focus more on ab workouts. Leg lifts, crunches, twists, they all work.

Do situps like crazy, hold on to a bar and lift your legs until they touch the bar, that works the lower part of you abs, do that and you'll have abs like a body builder.
