Sorry to be negative, but most bars have 10 different beers that taste the same. If you know Budweiser, Miller Lite, Rolling Rock, Amstel Light, Heineken, Corona, you know 90% of the beers sold. It's pathetic, but true. If you're lucky they'll at least have Sam Adams. Not great, but acceptable.

It's not possible to learn the names of all the different kinds of beers because there are too many! There are thousands of different kinds of beer! However, you can find just about all the information you need on beer at the website ratebeer.com. That is an excellent site--you can look up beers by region, you can view all beers made by a given brewer, you can view beers by style, etc.
The best way to learn about beer is by drinking it. I would advise you, if you want to learn about beer, to just go around to local beers and try everything they have on tap. (Don't do it all in one night! You want to remember what they taste like!)
As a bartender, it's probably more important that you know how to mix drinks than it is that you know about the different types of beer. Beer is very straightforward--most people will know what they want and all you need to do is pour it. However, mixing drinks can be fairly complex--there are a lot of different kinds of drinks that you need to know how to mix, and some of them require a fair amount of skill.
There are a ton of websites on the net about mixed drinks. Check out the ratebeer.com site for beer, and the others for mixed drinks!

what you should do is go to that bar and look at what beer they serve there.
there are hundreds upon thousands of beer brands in the world, knowing all of them would be pointless, just find out the beers they serve at your local pub
