oh yes, certainly. They can run a mile and a quarter in 2 minutes and 5 seconds! And they run a little bit every morning. Those horses are fitter than a lot of human athletes like many of these football players and baseball pitchers. Many horses are athletes, not just the race horses... jumpers are very athletic horses, and the upper level hunters and western horses are very athletic too.

Hmm... I don't think so. It's not so much a question of whether or not animals count as athletes, but whether or not being an athlete requires the conscious decision to be an athlete. I think that it does. In other words, a horse is not an athlete because it doesn't know what an "athlete" is and never made the decision to become one. Humans think on a higher level than horses, and are able to to not only conceptualize athleticism but also to make the decision to become an athlete ourselves. Horses don't have that freedom; they perform because their trainer makes them perform, and they have no idea why (nor are they capable of asking that question).

Yes. Not only are they some of the fittest equines in the world, they are also some of the fittest animals. They have intense training schedules and carefully regimented exercises. They are supervised by trainers and grooms in the same way human athletes have coaches and personal trainers. We tend to think of the jockeys as the athletes, which is true, but the horses are equine athletes themselves.

Most definitely. . Not only are they very athletic, they are very fragile creatures with true personalities. . . The Kentucky Derby alone is the most exciting two minutes in Sports. And when we are lucky enough to see a Triple Crown Winner, there is nothing in comparison including a Super Bowl winning Quarterback. .
