Hi Fry. I am going to disagree with all of the previous answers. Protrusion of the nucleus pulposus is a synonym for a herniated disc! (and, therefore, not the CAUSE of a herniated disc).

Loss of elasticity of the annulus fibrosis (a) can lead to tears in the annulus, which in turn, allow the nucleus pulposus to protrude through the annulus, resulting in a 'herniated disc'. Thus, (a) appears to be the best answer.

Hope this helps. Best wishes and good luck.
