You could get into NY from Newark, but be careful. Depending of what time of day it could be an hour cab ride. Could be as little as 20 minutes as well.
There's not alot directly around the airport.
And just for the record, Newark is in NJ, but is considered a New York airport. (for all those idiots who thought it so important to correct you). Have fun in New York.

Getting to the city, there is AirTrain Newark to a NJ Transit or Amtrak Train. That'll get you to New York, but I'm not sure how much time you'll have to look around, it might cut close.
GOING ON A TANGENT HERE:
Newark is indeed in New Jersey, but it does service the NYC area. There's also a smaller city called Newark in upstate NY. Funny thing is, if you Google-Map search for airports in Newark, NY, it places a dot on the map, in the wrong place, with the wrong address, for Newark/Liberty International Airport. The actual area there contains a couple of houses and farms. That's an error of a couple hundred miles. Ouch.

There is not a lot right around there, If you want to go to a mall, Get a cab from the Airport to the Jersey Gardens Mall, in the Neighboring town of Elizabeth (actually Terminal 1 and almost 1/3 of the airport property is in the town of Elizabeth) about 5 min by cab. Or get on the AirTrain (the Airport on-site Monorail system) to 'Parking Area P4' for a shuttle bus, $3.
Jersey Gardens operates a shuttle from Newark International Airport at Airtrain Station P4. The shuttle leaves the airport every half hour. The shuttle runs Monday-Saturday 10:00am-8:00pm and Sundays from 11:00am-6:00pm.
The shuttle returns to the airport from Jersey Gardens every half hour from 10:15am-8:45pm Monday-Saturday and 11:15am-6:45pm on Sunday
Check with your airline about going out and returning through the security areas.

As disappointing as this may be, Newark Airport IS in NJ. Sorry.
The Jersey Gardens mall sucks and is depressing. You might find one good thing there, but that's it and you have to sift through piles of piles of garbage to find it.
I don't want to get into the people that frequent that place, but let's just say that they make Cletus and Brandine from the Simpsons look classy.
5 hours isn't enough time to do anything in Manhattan either. The time it will take you to get from Newark Penn to NY Penn and back again (and don't forget that this includes waiting for trains, which usually run every hour) will leave all of an hour to do something in NYC. Which is pretty much useless. An hour isn't even enough time to go to Macy's. There is a MacDonald's, though. So you've got that option...

Newark is in NJ not NY. There is a lot to do if you can get out of the airport. Get a car service.
