It was treated at the vet, hospitalized for a whole week with IV and Rx, etc, and tested for all other diseases, just had a liver problem and wouldn't eat, but getting vet's Rx pills and made major progress with enzyme levels, etc, but still have to force feed it. How long does force feeding last until the cat eats by itself ?

I just found out my yesturday that my cat also has fatty liver, disease,$500 dollars later, I have him home with my and was told to force feed him, see if it works and put him down if it doesn't. From what I have read you just want to force feed him until he eats on his own. I bought cod liver oil, meaty (with no onion) baby foods, tuna juice, low sodium chicken broth. Anything I could mush up and have been syringe feeding him. Not sure how to increase his water intake though. Anyways good luck with your cat.

I don't think you can force feed dry food. It would have to be wet food, watered down a little. You put it in a food syringe, open the cat's mouth, and shoot it down her throat. I have done this many times with a cat who was ill and recovered an amazing number of times. She lived to be 22. My trusted and very experienced vet tech told me that when a cat stops eating, it becomes anorexic. Your cat may simply have fallen into this habit. I agree with the person who posted about tempting the cat with other foods. My vet tech said that you give the cat anything (safe) it will eat to stimulate its appetite. I suggest tuna water, cheese, or a small amount of milk or yogurt. Once the cats starts eating again, she will eat her dry food. Hills Science Diet A/D is a nutritious canned food that my cat ate even when very sick. I would try that. A large weight loss can be caused by thyroid disease. You should try calling the vet and talking to a vet tech. You should be able to get some free advice that way. If you explain your financial situation, they may just do the blood tests without charging an office fee. I think most vets understand how hard it is for people to afford their fees right now. I have had to do this for over a month before. Then out of the blue I had a can of tuna opened for sandwiches and the cat went crazy so I gave him some and he started eating ever since then.
I have also had one that went back and forth and I found CyproHeptadine ( not sure of the spelling It is a Antihistamine that vets give that has a side of effect of creating the munches in cat) Very helpful I have found to give it in very low doses, So you may ask the vet for some I only gave a 1/2 doses and my cat ate in 2 hours after giving the med.

It depends on the cat and the individual circumstances of the affliction which is unique to your cat. The acute attack can be cured but it can flare up again and if left too long without treatment can become Hepatic Lipidosis (if it hasn't already) which can remain with your cat for the remainder of it's life. It can be controlled by diet, but you need to also ensure your cat is eating regularly. 24 hours without food is too long for some cats and will cause damage to the liver.
You will need to keep force feeding until the cat will eat alone, if this doesn't happen within a a few days, I would be taking the cat straight back to the clinic.
Try to tempt her with her favourite food, just a little bit of it to entice her to start eating alone, once they start eating alone, the appetite usually improves quickly.
You really should ask your vet this question as he/she is the best one to answer that question as they know the cats history , a phone call should do it.
