Take him/her to the vet and get the ear infection or mite infestation treated.. usually when a dog excessively scratches their ears it is one of those two problems. Simply cleaning the ear will not help, also never use q-tips. If your dog is also shaking his head alot then he could easily give himself an aural hematoma, which will cost (where I live) $400CAN to get it fixed. A visit to the vet and ear meds will usually be under $50, and its well worth it. An aural hematoma is when the dog shakes its head too much and breaks a blood vessel in the ear flap which then fills up with fluid and has to be cut open drained and then stiched to keep the wound open for 6 weeks. Its messy, painful and expensive.. If the ear infections/scratching are chronic(as in my dogs case) a food allergy is usually the culprit and a change of food to something with no corn etc and an alternative protein source (such as beef, fish, duck, venison) will usually help to prevent future ear problems.

Here is a link to a site with info about ear problems in dogs it may help you out with treatment options. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_ear_infections.html

PS if the scratching is a major problem the vet will give you an elizabethan collar to prevent the dog from hurting himself(the collar looks like a lampshade as the first replier so eloquently put it) they can also be purchased at pet stores.

Your dog most likely has either ear mites or fleas. Ear mites are usually hard to detect. Sometimes with ear mites the skin in and around the ear will look somewhat scaly..There are over the counter medications for this however check with your vet first because using a medication for ear mites when that's not actually the problem can cause harm to your dogs ears..Good Luck!

Please take your dog to the vet. Cleaning the ears was actually the WRONG thing to do. The vet will want to extract some of the stuff inside the ear to determine treatment -- could be yeast, bacteria, or a combination of both.

Don't wait, ear infections only get worse, and your dog can be deafened permanently or even die. Sometimes super-severe ear infections require surgery (very expensive surgery) to keep the dog from dying. They can't always prevent hearing loss.

See your vet! I would anticipate something like $35 for the test and $40 for the prescription to treat the ears. Not too bad compared to maybe surgery!!

The dog could have an ear infection.Call the vet and have them make sure.

It could also be allergies.

Do Not put anything in the dogs ears without contacting the vet first

Sounds like ear mites. I would get him to the vet and they will give you a bottle of Earmadite that you put in the ear each day and massage the ear after you put the drops in-it isn't expensive either.

Have your vet check out your dog's ears. It could be ear mites or an allergy of some kind. Dogs scratch where it itches so your dog will stop scratching when his ears stop itching.

dogs dont scratch their ears for fun, somethings wrong. my puppy who will be one in april, had ear infections early on. it was an inner ear infection and she had them in each ear. you want to vet to take a sample of his/her ear and test it for infection, ear mites etc.. my vet gave me meds. for my puppy and it went away quickly. Your dog also may have allergie problems, like mine, and that can trigger certain irritants to the ear canal. My advice is ask your vet. and make sure you get the right meds. before you self diagnose and buy over the counter. GOOD LUCK!
