I think you will have to look for websites that give the history of particular forms of transportation and see how far back they go.
If you are going to start with 1200's, you are talking about walking, riding horses, mules, and jackasses, riding in unsprung carts behind horses or mules, rowing boats and sailing boats and that is about it. Not sure when canals started, with man drawn and horse drawn boats. There isn't much change except boats getting bigger until springing is added to wagons and rails are used for hauling on land and the much more recent addition of steam and internal combustion engines, then electricity and aviation.
Look for 'transportation timelines' on the web but sites like this one http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bl_history_of_transportation.htm
leave a big gap in the early times you are interested in.
Most of the others I checked quickly do as well.
