I have a BFA in Interior Design and the first thing I'll tell you is there is not "right" or "wrong" color. The psychology of the color red is that it is "aggressive" and it actually makes people want to eat. If you notice, most major fast food chains have red in their logos. The whole "dark makes your room look smaller" thing is a myth. It actually makes the walls recede into the background. If you choose to go with the red I would used a tinted primer on the wall first and then paint. You'll need less coats that way and also, instead of the white, I would use a cream of a tan. My bedroom is a suede textured ralph lauren paint (rowan berry) and I used Behr brand raffia cream on my ceiling because with a dark color on my walls a white ceiling would be very stark contrast. If you do paint and find it is "too much" try using lighter colors in your bedding and accent decorations like lamps or throw pillows. Also, if your room is small, try putting a mirror across from a window, it reflects the view and make the room feel more open and spacious. Most of all have fun with it! I tell my mother all the time it's only paint! Who wants to live in a house with all white walls, its soooo boring! One last thing, make sure to get a semi-gloss paint so it can be wiped down but the light won't blind you when it reflects off the wall...

Dark red is on its way out. It was oh sooooo popular during the run of Trading Spaces, but that's a thing of the past. People didn't realize just how hard it is to paint red walls. Red paint has a different base than other colors and it needs up to 8 or 9 coats to get good coverage without lines.
If you want a deep rich color, try navy blue or purple instead. They're in a different mixture and go on much better. They're also always in fashion...especially navy blue. Use the red for fabrics, flooring and curtains so that you don't kill your neck getting walls right.

i had a "fresh blood" red bedroom in college, and to soften the color of the wall i used colored lamps (red blue and yellow bulbs from any Walmart or Kmart or wherever) and christmas lights to soften the tone. While you probably going for something more sophisticated than christmas lights, i would recommend the colored bulbs or shades for lamps in the room.
I would avoid using black furniture in a red and white room unless you totally love the eighties. Maybe a slightly lighter red and a light tan instead of red and white. Dark wood furniture would make this warm and romantic. If you already have venetian blinds, try sheer drapes in a third color (your accent to the tan and red, maybe apple green or sage) that you incorportate else where in the room (throw pillows, a frame around a mirror, a table runner for your bedside tables)
i would put the bed on the short wall, hopefully you have a great painting or mirror to hang on the other short wall
(framed mirrors help make a room larger)

Dark red might give the small room a closed in feeling, which is not what you want to achieve.
If you like the color combination of white, black, and dark red, you could use these colors in your room. You could use a creamy white on the walls, your black furniture, and the dark red as accents and in accessories.

dark red is passionate, not relaxing or depressing...but dark colors will make the room smaller, and dark furniture will make it feel even smaller, so you may want to make the fabrics on your windows and your bedding white (bed against the red wall!) , with accenting red and black pillows....i think it should come out great...what color is your flooring? just make sure you have enough lightness to contrast the dark and it will turn out fine!

Dark red for me is neither depressing or relaxing. If you want your room to be relaxing better paint it with cool colors like shades of green, light blue or yellow

dk. red, white & black would look nice. I don't think it would be relaxing, definitely not depressing, more of a formal look. That's not bad either. This combination goes very well with oriental themes.
