Would a canary make a good pet if I wanted a tame bird? or do they just sit in their cages and sing?

I have heard it is possible to tame canaries; but I have never seen anyone actually do it.

I would recommend that you keep the canary just the way he is.

Sure they can and sing well too, when used to you. My grandfather tamed canaries. Just have a lot of patience and time. As for house pets maybe if no small children around and large cages. They do go well with other birds in the cages.

Hi I love you when you don't suck, Hand-fed/ raised birds are easier to train. Males are the ones that sing. An untamed canary can be won over with a lot of patience and one bird is more trainable than 2. Two birds together generally bond with each other rather than with us.http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/birds/a/canaries.htm This is an article about their general care.http://www.adpost.com/us/pets/25916/ This is a good source for canaries. You can also put Hand Fed Canaries For Sale (name of your city, and state) in your search engine. Breeders are best because the birds' environment and history is easier to know. I hope you find what you are looking for and have a great relationship to the lucky bird that finds you.

If you want a tame canary, I'd say you should have good experience with easier birds to tame, like tiels.
Also, if you do want to try, get one about two months old, or even less if you can, and hand feed it, not sure it would work too well though.

I have 2 canaries they both are boys one is green and the other is yellow. They sing beautifully, and are really sweet birds. I tried to tame both of them with no luck.

One day I let my green canary out his cage to let him fly and try to get him to sit on my shoulder. He flew right into the TV, and almost knocked himself out! And I tried to do the same thing with the other one and he flew and fell behind the dresser!

If you really have your heart set on having a tame bird that you can hold, and let sit on your shoulder. I would not get a canary. They are truly a cage birds. I hope that this has helped.

Finches and canaries can be tamed, but it is rare. They are usually hand fed birds that were kicked out of the nest.

If you want a bird that can be tamed, the best two first birds are cockatiels and budgies (parakeets).

Well I know a friend of mine who has a canary and it is always caged and once in a while sings but according to her she always catches it singing! I would rather get a parakeet and teach it how to talk! I think that would be a better pet for you!
~Hoped this helped!

yes, they can be tamed...make sure you get a fairly young one, under a year old. A family freind of mine had a tame canary. And you will have to make sure you take tehm out on a regular basis etc. to keep them tame..and preferably just get one not two birds.
