I was a very naive nice girl and I let my friend (who is an idiot, and I'm an even bigger idiot for helping him) get a phone from Sprint under my name. It's been at least 3 months and he has not made one payment. I have tried to get him to pay and I can't afford it. I know I made a mistake in trying to help him and I AM RESPONSIBLE. But what can I do??? I can't pay it right now and I guess he just doesn't care enough about me to pay it. I am regretting ever even knowing this person and I want to quit bugging him about it? Advice?

Since the phone is in your name, you are the one carrying the financial and credit risk unfortunately.

The guy obviously isnt paying you so first things first. Call Sprint and have the phone cancelled immediately. Dont rationalize this out because this is your credit history and finances that this guy is screwing around with. Dont let this get out of hand otherwise it can really hurt your credit rating and interfere with your life in a real way.

Hopefully, there was no contract signed. If there wasnt then basically 'fess up to Sprint about what happened and tell them that you want to enter into a payment plan with them and settle this issue once and for all. Likely, they will be glad to hear from you and will work something out. Most creditors are willing to enter into a payment plan with a delinquent customer. Better the devil you know....

But in all honesty if there were a way to borrow the money from a relative or something, I'd probably do that. Better to owe them then some corporation.

If there is a contract then you are probably going to have to pay a fee to break the contract. Oh well. You have to do what you have to do here.

In any case, the first thing that needs to be done is end the phone service. Now. Dont let the guy say he will pay you, "next week," because it is too late, you have already asked for it and not received any money, and now your credit rating is being hurt. Time's up.

Small claims court is an option afterwards if things get really messy and the guy refuses to pay you back, but the immediate concern is to protect your credit rating. Handle that first and then go after the money from this guy. Chances are though that this will just be an expensive lesson for you unfortunately.

Do you really need this drama in your life? Make it simple. Cancel the phone service, borrow the early termination fee from a family member (hopefully it's just 200) and write this guy off. It's really a lesson learned. Now you know not to ever cosign and it just cost you a couple hundred. It costs some people a lot more money to learn the same lesson. The court route will only cause you more stress, cut your loses.

Cancel the service immediately. If you have anything in writing that says he will pay the bills, take him to small claims if you have to. If you have nothing in writing, you can still take him to court, but it is your word against his that he was supposed to pay instead of it being a gift from you because you are/were/wanted to be his girlfriend. It's a hard lesson to learn, but one that most everyone learns the hard way at one time or another.
