when we got our chicken it had a medal "nose ring" to keep it from pecking other chickens. Now the bottom part is a lot longer than the top and she has trouble eating. Is it okay to trim the bottom beak and if so how would it be done?

If you cut its beak to far, then it will harm the chicken severly. It's the same sensation as having your finger cut off...=/

Hi there. If possible, have a vet show you how the first time.http://www.answers.com/topic/debeaking This article discusses the general reason it is done and some of the consequences. It is possible for an experienced avian vet to modify what you need so as to not cut as drastically as what is usually done. Have clear communication for your needs of your chicken and things should go well. Beak trimming is usually extreme with chickens, but I don't believe this has to be the case. Have a great spring.

Trim a little at a time. just like on a dog's nails, if it starts to bleed, stop. if this is not as short as it should be, just keep working at keeping it every week to keep it short and you should be able to get it smaller over time.

TAKE IT TO A VET, DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF!!!

There are blood vessles in the beak and done wrong, your bird can bleed to death in a matter of minutes.

You might hurt him.
