I assume you don't want to be scammed by disreputable people. This is not as easy as it sounds when it comes to finding breeders.
You may want to contact your local dog training school. Reponsible breeders usually sell puppies to responsible owners who take them straight to puppy school.
You may also want to find out if there is a pet therapy program in your area. Siblings of successful pet therapy dogs are likely to be good pets.
If you are interested in a particular breed that is known for a particular sport, find people in your area doing that sport. For example, if you wanted a German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Boxer, Malinois, Pit Bull, Bouvier, or Riesenschnauzer, you might contact a Schutzhund club.
Or if you wanted a Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, or Bearded Collie, you might contact a herding club.
If you want a Dachshund, Border Terrier, or the like, you might look for an Earthdog club.
Whatever you do, don't get a dog from an ad in the paper or sign at the pet store. These are prime ways people get scammed.
Most if not all puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. Not that I don't love all dogs, because I DO, but a puppy that was raised under less than ideals conditions is going to need a lot of extra socializing time and/or $$.
A good sign is if you are asked to sign a contract. Be sure to read carefully. Things like who pays for what and what kind of warranty you have if hte puppy drops dead 2 days after it comes home.
One other unusual place you might check is a purebred rescue of the type of dog you like. Generally these people are fans of the breed, and are in the know about the breed in your area.
Of course, I hope you find the perfect pal of your dreams!!

You start with a search of a particular breed,
And then try the AKC site to find a responsible breeder near you
