You should end its suffering, it's not your fault, if you took care of it like you should.

Dear Boots, Know that cancer has no cure and you sound very compassionate. We live in a society that fears death and will do anything to many times prolong suffering to the very end.We even let our loved ones suffer in hospital beds in their own excrement. Really sad and cruel. My experience is that any vet, avian or not, can assist you on this sad but necessary ordeal. Call around first. The cost is less if you take the body. It should be very affordable. Say your good byes and know you two had a great run together. It is quick and painless. My thoughts are with you.

Sorry to hear about your canary. Sounds like he's been around for a while!
You can euthanize your canary yourself. It's simple if you can stomach doing it - pet euthanazia isn't for everyone. It can be heart wrenching if the pet in question was especially dear to you.
The euthanizing kit includes:
** a small tank of helium (can be bought/rented at party and balloon stores)
** a plastic container with 4 holes poked in the BOTTOM (very important! The holes on the bottom of the container let the oxygen leave the container as oxygen is heavier than helium. ). A plastic pie plate and lid works well.
**a tube to connect the container to the helium tank.
Place the bird into the container/tank contraption and turn on the tank. Make sure the lid is on good :-) . Walk away for 15 minutes. It shouldn't take longer than 20 minutes for the guy to pass on. Helium is really good for euthanasia because it convinces the brain that its oxygen. The critter simply falls asleep due to no oxygen in the brain and there's no panic. Carbon dioxide tends to make animals freak out as they feel like they're suffocating to death. Birds, because of their highly efficient respiratory system, tend to fall easily to the helium.
In a pinch you could freeze your guy, but it's a **really** uncomfortable way to die. You could knock out the critter before doing this, but I don't know of any meds that could make your canary sleep before this is done.
Note about needles to the heart: PAINFUL!!!!!!!! Make sure your vet knocks the critter out first. Imagine getting a hockey stick shoved into your chest without pain relief!

I just had to put my mouse down and it is so quick and easy (for her not me). The injection went directly into her heart. At first I thought it was horrible, but was told it is better because it is so direct. Her suffering was over in 30 seconds or less. It's hard to do but call local vets and ask if the put birds to sleep you will find someone to put your friend out of misery. Sorry for your loss.

yes sweetie i think your baby's time has come to go on to the other side.if he;s that old and getting that sick putting an end to his suffering would be the kindest thing to do for your ole friend..i had to put my dog of 7yrs down' and it was really hard, but it was harder to watch my poodle suffer as he gasped for breaths all day+nite.do the right thing and let him go to god and visit other birds and animals at the rainbow bridge.thats where pets go when they die.LOL ps any vet could put him down.it doesn;t have to be a bird docter,,,,
