"Escort of the mother of the bride".. hmm.. if that is your only position in the family and you are not the mother's fiance or otherwise part of the immediate family who would be expected to be in the formal wedding photos I would say you could get away with wearing what the other male guests are wearing. If you're her common-law husband or in a permanent relationship and standing in for the bride's father in any other way.. wear the tux.
It certainly wouldn't HURT anything to wear the penguin-suit.. most men look fabulous in them :)

Usually the escort of the bride's mother doesn't dress as formally as the groom. However, it's the bride's day. If it's important for her that the whole wedding party, and you are part of the wedding party as the mother of the bride's escort, wear a tux, do it. It's a small thing if it's important to the bride. Consider it part of your gift to her :-)

Most of the time, the escorts are the ushers and the ushers do wear tuxedoes ... you will probably be wearing a different vest color from the groomsmen, but still in a tux.

No. Unless it is a very formal black tie marriage ceremony in which the entire guys will likely be in tuxedos . . . he will have to put on a first-rate go well with, like the opposite visitors will put on. He isn't the bride's father, and he isn't a member of the marriage ceremony celebration.

it depends how formal the occasion is. you should probably base your attire on whatever the father of the bride or bride's escort is wearing.
