Check with your school district to find out what is legal.
Unschooling is a form of education in which learning is based on the student's interests, needs, and goals. It may be alternatively referred to as natural learning, child-led learning, discovery learning, delight-led learning, or child-directed learning.
Unschooling is generally considered to be a form of home education, which is simply the education of children at home rather than in a school. Home education is often considered to be synonymous with homeschooling, but some have argued that the latter term implies the recreation of school in the context of the home, which they believe is philosophically at odds with unschooling.
Unschooling contrasts with other forms of home education in that the student's education is not directed by a teacher and curriculum. Although unschooling students may choose to make use of teachers or curricula, they are ultimately in control of their own education. Students choose how, when, why, and what they pursue. Parents who unschool their children act as "facilitators," providing a wide range of resources, helping their children access, navigate, and make sense of the world, and aiding them in making and implementing goals and plans for both the distant and immediate future. Unschooling expands from children's natural curiosity as an extension of their interests, concerns, needs, goals, and plans.
The term unschooling was coined by John Holt. An author of ten books on education, John Holt founded the unschooling magazine Growing Without Schooling.

I'm wondering if the "homeschool expert" that said "unschooling is illegal period" took any time to look in to that? I'm also wondering why someone that obviously does not have children, does not homeschool and does not have the desire to research her answers (translate as think) before she gives them comes on here to spread ignorance and false information towards something about which she knows nothing.
weird.
anyway, if you meet the state requirements for homeschooling in Florida which includes maintaining a portfolio and submitting your child to testing or evaluation per state requirements, then yes, unschooling is legal.
Know how long it took me to find out that the statement "unschooling is illegal period" is wrong (besides thinking about it for two second) haha probably not as long as it took that person to type it.
The key is to make sure you are following the state guidelines. Homeschooling is not about breaking the law. It is about exercising your right to choose within the legal parameters of your state.
It is sad when I see people come on here asking for ways around their state laws.
One person asked a question about whether it was ok to not do something their state required of them. No, it is not ok.
But, yes, unschooling is perfectly legal, as long as you keep up with the two things your state requires of you.

Check with hslda.org for legal requirements on homeschooling in FL -- then it's up to you which method you choose.
DO NOT got to the school district as they aren't part of the loop and can cause issues you don't need. And NO unschooling is not illegal -- it is a method of homeschooling.
Blessings!

From what is said here it probably is, but you still have to pass an annual test in Florida, so material covered in that test is required no matter what.

Unschooling is illegal period and children are to be in school by age 6-7 years old. If you're referring to home schooling that's legal, but you are responsible for all expenses and documentation of educational progress.
