I am taking COSC in college and I do not care or wish to learn Microsoft Access. I was wondering if someone could help me and tell me why I should learn Access and what it does

4 very good reasons:

1) MS Access is a database "multi-tool". It can be tweaked into doing just about anything. Rather than having to script every step, Access provides an easy-to use GUI for all steps in data mining, data management, and report generation. We use it to (among other things) dynamically generate .bat files, Perl scripts, and SQL scripts for import into more robust data-miners, also as a scheduler to e-mail hundreds of pre-formatted reports for various users, and to track departmental activity/productivity/workflow for stats no-one would dedicate server space to, but managers would waste hundreds of hours compiling manually.

2) It can assist in learning SQL and Visual Basic (the scripting language it uses is based on VB), since it has a GUI and a Script view.

3) It's FREE with the MS Office Professional suite, so companies/departments on a budget will use it to replace tracking and data-mining software they would LIKE to get, but can't get...or to make "band-aid" solutions while they wait on programmers to "fix" things.

4) MS Access is a fairly easy to learn & work with, so many people will learn enough of it to get a project started, but not enough to keep it going. If You know enough to fix & improve it for them you will be thier FAVORITE person (I've gotten more than a couple of free lunches for 5 minutes of troubleshooting :-D ).
