Well apache is not an FTP pacakge, I use proftp but there are several others available to use. Depends alot on what distribution of Linux your using as to what might be best.

Another option would be SFTP (secure FTP). If you already have an ssh server running, you can connect with an sftp client like gftp, winscp tramp (an emacs plugin), or the plain command line sftp, with the user and password you use for ssh and transfer files. SFTP is encrypted and doesn't need an extra data port like FTP, so it plays more nicely with firewalls.
