I had repeated kidney infections about 20 years ago due to a birth defect that they eventually fixed through surgery. My doctor told me that I probably suffered minor kidney damage because of the repeated infections (many over the course of a year). I drink lots of water and my kidneys seem to be working fine. I'd say that with the one incident that you had, you will probably be OK.
There are several tests that they can administer to check your kidney function. If you are concerned, ask your doctor for a few of these tests. See this link for what they check for.

I've had many many many kidney infections. I recently had an ultrasound test to determine if I had any damage to my kidneys because of the repeated infections and the test came back that I did not have any damage. Once you finish the Cipro though you should go back to the doctor and get retested for the infection to make sure it is completely gone.
Some doctors will say "oh you're fine you finished the medication you don't need to be retested " but be adamant - it's your health - get retested! But, go back to the doctor sooner if you don't feel any better.
Kidney infections are nothing to mess with and are soooo painful.
And, drink lots of cranberry juice.

for furture reference ALWAYS request cipro for a UTI its the best, but its very strong so they usually wont give it to you right away. if the pain wasnt bad enough to take you to the ER you are probably fine. you may have some residual damage from the infection. after the infection is gone from your bladder you may feel the effects in your kidneys. youll have lower back pain and a lot of discomfort. you dont have the infection anymore but damaged has been caused. your kidneys will heal. those 2 days you were on antibiotics and you more than likely did not cause any life altering changes to your urinary tract. if your still having pain a week after you finished the cipro head to a urologist, they may need to ultrasound your kidneys.

If you start showing signs of a fever, pain in lower back, blood in urine, go to emergency right away.
In addition, drink PLENTY of water and Cranberry juice, I prefer CranRasberry works great! I had a kidney infection and it cleared up right away.
Hang in there

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Yes you should have gone to the ER but you will not know how much if any damage was done unless they check your kidneys. With any luck you are just fine.
