The jury that is the medical research field is still out on this one. Some say yes, others say no, others say that there simply isn't enough proof one way or the other. The caffeine will increase metabolism and I've noticed that my appetite is reduced for about an hour after drinking it, but I don't think there is conclusive proof one way or the other on the weight loss.

However, there are many other health benefits including protections from various types of cancers which is something that can't be said for coffee or other caffeinated beverages so drink up.

Yes it does, but not as much as many people make out to be.

Increase metabolism (First link)

A study conducted Dr Dulloo in the University of Geneva found that drinking a green tea extract beverage three times a day increases energy expenditure by 4%.

Is 4% too small to make any difference?

If you burn 2,000 calorie a day, this translates to 80 calories, roughly the same amount of calories in a small banana. It is no magic bullet.

But increasing metabolism is not the only way green tea helps lose weight. It also promotes fat burning and reduces absorption and storage of fat. The sum total of these actions has not yet been quantified, but is likely to be significant.

Combine with Exercise (Second link)

The best way to lose weight is to combine green tea with exercise.

Two Japanese studies found that drinking green tea improves endurance performance by up to 24%. Combining green tea and exercise reduces weight gain by 90%!

So green tea is not magic formula, but as a healthy supplement, and in combination with exercise, it is splendid!

A while back i went on a diet, gave up coffee and drank green with lemon grass which is much nicer than green tea alone, during which time i lost nearly 2 stone within 3 months, however after i stopped drinking green tea (yet was still on same eating plan) my weight loss dramatically slowed down and even stopped. Well recently i have again started to drink green tea with lemon grass instead of coffee ( my ultimate addiction) and again the pounds have started to fall of me, so to me yes green tea does give your diet the ultimate boost and the best thing about it is the weight has stayed off.

Not in the slightest, no practising physician would suggest there is any scientific basis for this claim.
There are no shortcuts. We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don't do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don't use them up!

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg.

Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?

I have seen hundreds of questions with this same pattern :- I am fat, tell me where on line I can get this super diet or herbal/dangerous/illegal drug that I hear will fix it for me in 10 minutes without the need for me to get off the couch!

No fixes pal , less in more out, its the only way. When I googled loose weight I got 57,500,000 hits. Fifty-seven and a half million!!!!!!

Yeah, but you have to drink a good amount though. It increases your metabolism and curbs your appetite. I drink 5-6 cups a day. You can get boxes of green tea bags at your local grocery store for very cheap. And it's even cheaper at a chinese market if you can find one. It's about $3.00 for a box of 100.

Chinese people drink tea during and after they consume oily/fried foods to cleanse the oil and grease in their system.

Hope this helps!

Green tea contains large amounts of catechins which are antioxidants. this is good because antioxidants can help with:

regulating cholesterol levels, lower high blood pressure, fight the buildup of plaque in the arteries, lower the risk of some forms of cancer, destroy certain disease-causing bacteria and viruses, help control blood sugar levels, assist in weight loss, fight tooth decay, help protect the body against free radical damage, and several other things.

so long story short it is a good addition to exercise (cardio) for weight loss.

I have heard that green tea helps to boost the metabolism. Whether it's true or not, i'm not actually sure. But it sounds about right to me.

Green tea helps to detoxify the system, not necessarily lose weight.
