dental floss and dental tape are made out of nylon fiber filaments or plastic wound together and sometimes coated with a wax to prevent the filaments from fraying. When dental floss was first invented it was made of silk.

DENTAL FLOSS IS MANUFACTURED FROM NYLON, INTO VARIOUS TYPES. SOME OF THESE ARE WAXED OR UN WAXED IN EITHER SINGLE THIN STRANDS OR RIBBON.
THE OTHER MATERIAL CAN BE PLASTIC OR GORTEX (GLIDE). ANY FLOSS VARIETY CAN ALSO FLAVORED AND MAY ALSO CONTAIN FLUORIDE.
I ONCE HAD AN ELDERLY PATIENT WHO AS A LITTLE GIRL HAD SOME FOOD STUCK BETWEEN HER TEETH. SINCE FLOSS HADN'T BEEN INVENTED YET, THIS IS BACK CIRCA 1930), SHE USED PLAIN SEWING THREAD. IT WORKED SO WELL THAT, SHE KEPT IT UP UNTIL THEY INVENTED NYLON FLOSS. SHE WAS IN HER LATE 80'S AND STILL HAD ALL HER TEETH.
