I agree with the general consensus so far: The care of the child should be preferred. Any religion out there allows you a personal relationship with your own deity or lack thereof that is not reliant on trappings of religion. You can still be devout and highly religious, if that's your calling, and take care of a child.

If you do not have human connections in your lifetime, and you do not do good towards others, then you will very likely wind up unfulfilled. It's only in seeing how we affect others that we can know how to treat them well, and the most important dictum in any religion or philosophy is to do well by your fellow man.

Well, if you read the Koran, you will see that God judges us according to our deeds..He tells us to take care of orphans, feed the poor, restrain our anger, forgive, and many other things..Perhaps you grew up in a family where religion meant going to the mosque on Friday--then doing nothing else..Listen to this--I'm not a fan of hadiths (sayings of the Prophet), but this is one that I think is true, and reflects the type of God we serve:
One time, there was a man who lived during the Prophets time, and all he did was go to the moque day and night, night and day--praying all day and all night. Finally, some people went to the Prophet Muhammad and said "Prophet, there is a man who goes to the masjid day and night--praying night and day. The Prophet asked, "Well, who is feeding him?", And they said "Ali". So, the Prophet said "Well, then, Ali is the better Muslim".

So, to answer your question, the True Muslim --and true Christian--who is sincerely devout--would take care of an orphan for a lifetime.

Take responsibility for an orphan.

Better to accomplish an objective good for another than preserve yourself at the expense of another.
