One theory is that as man started to live together in groups they developed a need to believe there was something more out there than mortality. A belief in an after-life was created to control and guide the people. During the early days of man religions were used to control people and keep them in line. Thomas Jefferson researched the King James Bible and by the way why do you think they called it that? The bible was structured to be favorable to those in power i.e. King James.

When man came down out of the trees they rubbed two sticks together said let there be light and created fire. It was magic. Shaman took this magic and turned it into a religion in order to control the masses. Later as religion became more suffocated Shaman became Priest Pastors and Profits. They continued to use religion to control the masses but quickly forgot its origin. Many now considered it a gift from a true God. Only people like the Pope and those high up in the wealthy echelon of the church now know what a crock it is.
