They are very smart and are sometimes used as search and rescue dogs, blind dogs and seizure dogs

Labs are intelligent, but be careful with they type you get. I don't think color matters. English labs are much more well behaved and easier to train than American labs, which are super energetic and were bred to assist hunters and run around in fields all day. My aunt has one black male english lab and one black male american lab and boy is there a difference between the two! They bought the american to replace another that was an english lab, I don't think they did all their research! Meet both parents if you are getting one from a breeder. If they are just like a dog you would want, their offspring will most likely be just like them. If one is nuts and you don't want a nutty dog, there is a chance some of the puppies inherited that behavioral characteristic. To give an example of the difference between the two dogs previously mentioned - During Thanksgiving last year, Fletcher (english) layed at everyone's feet calmly while Cooper (american) jumped on the table, counter, peoples laps, and took food off at every chance he could get, which was about every 30 seconds. Not so good for the turkey we were all excited to eat... Be sure to DO your research when it comes to this breed!

It depends on the dog, the breeder, the lines and how the puppies are handled before they are 12 weeks old.

The more stimulating the environment, the more people and things the puppies are exposed to before they are 12 weeks the smarter the dog will be. That is when the bulk of the neurons are growing in the puppies' brains, so the more things they have to "figure out" the more neurons grow.

No puppy should leave its litter before a bare minimum of 8 weeks old.

One of the smartest dogs I've ever met is an English style Chocolate Labrador Retriever.

Labs are very smart but require a consistent handler to help them learn. The best thing is that once they start learning they will absorb everything. Don't miss the opportunity of doing things right, from the start. Take your pet to Puppy Kindergarten and then move on to an adult Basic Obedience class. Do it right the first time and you won't have to re-teach them anything. Don't become distressed if they seem to be in the puppy phase too long, just keep at it. Repetition and consistency is the key to a well trained dog.
Good Luck.

All labs are great! I have had all kinds of dogs - my labs are the best. I have two now a yellow (year old) & a black one (5 months) They are very easy to train - be warned though they are very hyper & will run to you at full speed & don't seem to now had to stop! Go ahead & get one, you won't be disappointed! Good Luck!
