This is way to vague to truely analyze. No person, except that soldier can make that call. You, nor I, from the outside can sit back with all the time in the world, no explosions, no gun shot, no lives in danger, and make that call.

My dad, who was a former police officer, told me before I left for Iraq that "it is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6." In combat, you make the decisions and you cannot second guess yourself.

It happens all the time in battle, it is called collateral damage. And if the end justifies the means then that is how it must be. I do not know a single soldier who ever takes a life without thought. They have a job and most do it exceptionally well. They are professionals.

Thats against the rules of engagement, you could get in trouble for doing that if you were somehow found out. Its like being in swat you cant take that kind of risk unless the guy has a bomb strapped to him or something.

If you did it you wouldnt be a monster, but definately not a professional, you should have hit the target if your a professional.

If it was necessary for survival, and the hostage was an Iraqi, I think it would be immoral to sacrifice yourself in place of the hostage. We're cleaning up their mess, why should we die for their people any more than we have already?

Assuming that was the only shot you had, to save several lives, by taking one is logical, and I believe moral. If I were the hostage, and you could save two people by taking me out, I'd say go for it!!!!

I am a soldier. I would gladly risk a court martial to save the lives of my men. I would also much rather go home to jail than go home to a headstone.

No. It makes you a talentless actor shooting a slightly more talented actor like Jeff Daniels in a real dog of a movie.
