Why, when many people have a question about the Bible, are they told that we can't possibly understand it since we are mere humans? Why wouldn't God give us a book we can understand? Wouldn't that be within his power? This concept just doesn't make sense to me honestly.

I hate that. I've been told that since I am no longer a believer (others go even farther and claim I was never one since I left Jesus) that I cannot possibly understand the bible.

In reality - the bible isn't that hard to understand at a literal level. It's all pretty black and white. Some of the writing of the prophets can be a bit heavy - but most of it just reads like history.

We are told we cannot understand it because we do not see the bible the same way Christians do. We do not see the verses that Christians use to prove their faith. We do not see certain things in the same light. So we are told we simply cannot understand until we have faith in Jesus.

But my question would be: if we cannot understand the bible without Jesus, but cannot really get to know Jesus without the information in the bible - aren't we screwed?

The written bible is impossible to understand by itself because there is so much missing information. For example, the bible states in several places that we (Jews) are supposed to wear something called tefillin on our arm and between our eyes....yet it never describes what these 'tefillin' are? Yet for over 2000 years, at least (that how old the oldest pair ever found are) Jews have been making and wearing tefillin the same way. How did they know? The answer is that there was an Oral component that came along with the written. In fact, the oral preceded the written and the proof is that the most common phrase in the first 5 books of the bible is "and God said to Moses..."

The truth is that it really is not that difficult to understand. Sometimes when you read the King James version, with all of the thees and thous and thus saith the Lord... , it is hard to understand. Go out and find a New King James or New International Version or even a kids version, which I like, in my 30s. God has made a way for us to understand His word. It is within His power.

Well, I have never heard that myself, and from what I understand GOD didnt write the good book, man did, through the will of god. But, you have to understand, the Bible is one of the oldest books in history. And there have been so many updates and versions that the translation from the original text is not correct. Which would cause alot of confusion. Also, the bible is works alot with parables. Parables are stories that are told to make a point, sometimes the point is hard to find. Hope that helps!

The Bible was written to be understood by mankind. Wouldn't make no sense if HE gave us a Book we couldn't understand.

What is necessary is to know that alot of it is "revealed" as we grow.
If you don't grow, you won't really understand the deeper parts.

It's probably because that person doesn't know the answer, which is fine. We don't have all the answers.

But that doesn't mean you're incapable of understanding. When I have a question, I ask in prayer and study. Usually God brings me to the answer. :-)

The Bible says if you know God He will open your eyes to understand it. If you don't know God and don't have a personal relationship with Him, then it says He has blinded the minds of those who do not believe, so thay cannot understand.

Wrong!
That's the whole point of the Bible, it's a guide for life, and we all should be able to understand it.
It ain't exactly a scientific textbook written in theological pseudospeak.

When a person is a genuine seeker of the Lord, then the Bible will become intriguing to that person. When a person becomes a Christian, then the Holy Spirit will make the Bible alive to them.
