According to my Bible (King James Version), the devil is not cast into the lake of fire until Revelation 20:10. At which point, the great white throne judgement begins (Revelation 20:11-15).

The devil and all his demons are very much alive and well and walking the earth (Job 1:7).

He is the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2) and is the source of spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12).

Nothing is changed until, Jesus, gives the order to have,Satan, tossed in the lake of fire for ever and ever.

The catholics took a different point of view when they concluded as you have. If everyone was going to hell, then there would eventually be no souls left for Earth. So they conveniently came up with the notion of Purgatory.

It can be a little confusing, but then religion has that habit!
If our souls are eternal, however, it stands to reason that to learn all that we can from existence we would all have to spend time in Hell, and Heaven and all points in between.

The *devil* doesn't torment. He is only mentioned in the book of Job as an adversary. Think of him as God's prosecuting attorney or as the *evil inclination.* He doesn't have the power of a god.
