Both.
For 99% of the time man has been on earth he has been a hunter by profession. Hunting is in our genes from generation after generation of evolutionary selectivity. We are predators by nature. Why do we have canine teeth and forward facing eyes? If man never hunted we wouldn't be here or not nearly as developed.
In modern times, we realize the importance of conservation and we only take what can be taken, while still playing out our instincitve action of hunting.
I hunt for sport because it's in me and every other human. It may be covered up from the luxury of never having to kill for survival but it's there. I also hunt for food because I feel it is unethical and immoral to not harvest the animal.

Hunter is not my real name but I hunt only big game as in Caribou and Moose here in my province of NEWFOUNDLAND Ca. I love hunting an usually get balled out for passing up chances on good kills so I can hunt all or almost whole season ,before taking something (I got caught out years ago for doing this and they make me shoot sooner now and every hunter knows that when U take that shot ,its all over except the work.).Them boil ups and the hunting and sneaking away from unsuspecting beautiful animals I guess is a sport .The worst some days is when U forget the danged camera and that's the days U see everything.

I hunt mostly for meat, but i cant deny that i get a small kick out it. I don't mean that i get off blasting something and watching it die. I mean the rush of being out there, reading the sign. Knowing where the game has been, guessing where it will go and beating it there. Figuring out where they will come to the next time. I do not agree with head hunting, these guys that travel all over shooting for heads on high fence ranches. I think they are a bunch of losers with out the guts to do it the hard way. Now i will sorta contradict myself. I don't totally like sport hunting either but as long as it is fair chase and the meat is used then so be it.

I kill deer for food, most of the hunters I know kill for food. Some have no other way of affording to put meat on the table, all of them have decent jobs by the way. Somethings, like coyotes, woodchucks and raccons are hunted because they are detrimental to ditches, deer populations or are simply too numerous for their own good. These are hunted by many in the area, but almost never eaten.
I feel there is nothing wrong with killing vermin and not eating them, but to kill something large like a deer without eating it would be horrible in my opinion. I can't think of anyone who would do something like that, it is simply disrespectful and wasteful. What many people don't realize is that even sport hunters in Africa typically end up supplying somebody with meat, because many of these safari groups sell the meat to locals.
QDM, quality deer management, does bother me, because it goes against nearly everything I believe about hunting. I hunt, because I like being out in the woods, and I like venison. I don't do it because I want a massive pair of antlers on the wall, you can't eat bone. I guess in certain situations sport hunting bothers me, because it seems to breed greed and envy in many people. Antler envy had driven some of my friends from deer hunting.
If you are going to kill an animal you should use it for something if you can. Raccons, coyotes and muskrats can supply a little side money from fur sales. Nearly anything else can be used for meat. Many people who hunt purely for sport do give the meat away, and don't waste it. Anyone who would waste big game without a very very good reason shouldn't be hunting in my book, because he is than killing for fun not for a valid reason, sport hunting doesn't bother me unless they waste meat or hides which could be used by someone.

I eat um . But I do prefer to take large mature animals before nature does .
I make a challenge /sport out of matching wits with an animal that has superior senses in his environment.
No I dont respect a wasteful hunter at least give the meat to someone who enjoys it . and dont ever take more than you need.

I was taught to hunt for food and only kill for food except when I encountered dangerous animals (such as rattlesnakes which can, or not, be eaten). To this day I hunt for food and only shoot other animals which are dangerous such as venomous snakes and rabid coyotes. I've passed up shooting trophy class Bobcats because they are magnificent creatures that aren't necessarily menacing to me or others.
I am not saying I wouldn't shoot say a trophy class wild boar which I know is too big, old and gamy to eat, but boars are in epidemic proportions where I hunt, are considered pests are definitely classified as dangerous game. I know many hunters who only shoot trophy deer and donate the venison to the orphanages or old folks home. I respect them for that.

I am a life-long hunter. I will kill for food. I will trap or hunt overpopulated animals for fur. There is NO sport in killing. In my opinion, anyone that kills for the sake of killing is mentally defective, and should be sterilized immediately, before they can pass on their defective genetics.

I do both. I hunt deer to have for my family meals and to share with others. I hunt foxes for fun and profit. fox have become a problem around here with rabies and over population.
No , you cant eat the antlers of a buck, but, for the vast majority of deer hunters out there, taking a shot at a doe or a buck with a large rack standing near it is a no brainer. The buck is going to get shot at.
No, you cant eat the antlers, but thats why we have taxidermist that do shoulder mounts.
At the start of deer season, I have 2 tags for antlered deer, 2 for antlerless deer and 1 for either sex. I dont shoot small bucks, under 8 pointers so sometimes my buck tags are not all used, but my doe tags get used every year.
For all the " dont kill animals" PETA breath folks out there. Everytime you sit down to eat your salad or tofu, imagine all the animals that were displaced from their homes to grow your veggies. Or how many times the farmers growing your veggies went out and shot rabbits or deer and just left them in the woods, so that they wouldn't eat the veggies you are eating.
Last deer season in the state of Virginia, over 200,000 deer were reported killed. And guess what? The population is still growing! Imagine how many more deer would be out there to eat your veggies or run in front of your car on the highway.
Then they would start dieing off from under nourishment and disease.

I was brought up on wild game and hunt for food but if a man hunts for sport thats fine too as long as the meat goes to good use. They have a wild game for the homeless in NH so if you have extra instead of waisting you can donate it.
