are we a little paranoid. I seriously doubt your selling enough drugs to warrant them taping your phone.

There is really no way of knowing if your line is bugged, or tapped.. there are many instances where there is a repair trouble where a line can be crossed or unbalanced, which would cause you to hear someone else, or someone else to hear you... also, cheap phones echo, and can be noisy. 900mhz phones are easily listened in on with inexpensive radio scanners (police scanner). unless you can physicllay view every location of your phone line, from the phone, to the jack it is plugged in, all thru the wiring inside your home, to the nid, up to the areail terminal (phone pole) to the underground terminal (phone pole) to the bridge tap (manhole) to the multiple locations (additional phone poles) all the way to the central office, and to the operating equiptment where the dial tone originates... so as you can see, there is many many places that a legal, or illeagal tap or bug can be placed on a line, but without being able to physicllay view these locations you wont be able to know if it is the case...
If it is the feds (a legal tap) then chances are your cell is tapped also. They can monitor payphones, i dont beleive that they can tap payphones, but they can get the call records for them.. so.. dont use the same payphone more then once.. get a prepaid cell phone, not in your name, and not one of those where its linked to a credit card, or bank account.. pay for the refill cards with cash.. and replace the phone/sim card/phone number often, possibly even changing carriers.. and most importantly... do not discuss anything that may implicate you in any possible investigation... use the phone only for trivial conversation.. and if someone attempts to discuss matters that may get you implicated in any criminal matter, hang up.
discuss any sensitive matters with people only in person face to face.. and even then choose your wording carefully.. and never use the internet for any information that may be used against you in court.. the fed cops are more tech. advanced then you think (not the ones that are gonna come get you, but the ones who track the computer crimes)

I think the Radio Shack device detects a drop in voltage to determine if someone else is listening in. This probably only works for extension phones in your house not a "true" wire-tapping.
In most U.S. states, it's against the law to tape record the conversation of two people without their knowledge. You can tape record a conversation if you're one of the people in that conversation and you don't have to inform the other parties.
If you're being tapped for no reason, have some fun with it. Give them a big line and some juicy tidbits. If you have a rotten neighbor, call a friend up and in the conversation metion that you think your neighbor has Osama bin Laden as a house guest.

If you've done something or involved yourself with someone who is a criminal, then it very well might be. You can hear clicks when you're on the phone. I changed my number....and my associations with the people who the police wanted. I actually had a neighbor who could hear my conversations and i never figured out how he did it- I tested him twice and he failed!! Still makes me mad to this day.

It is very hard to tell when your phone is being monitored. However, if you chew tinfoil while you talk on the phone, your saliva will interact with the tinfoil and cause a static that will foil the most sophisticated listening devices

Radio Shack has an inexpensive device you attach to your phone. A light will indicate if your phone is tapped.
