if every cell in your body has a nucleus and is therefore a potential human being, when you scratch your nose are you engaged in a holocaust of potential human beings?

You misunderstand the biology behind reproduction.

While every cell in your body DOES contain a complete set of DNA (your personal code), NOT every cell is destined to be used for reproduction. Those cells are only found in your reproductive organs, and only certain cells at that. The rest of the cells of your body have been specified for use, divided into various tissues, organs, etc.

Stem cells are unspecified cells. Their full function still is not known, but so far, we have discovered that a "generic" stem cell may be turned into specific tissues. If, and that is a big IF, researchers could take a "generic code" stem cell, and develop it into a specific organ, say, a pancreas, THEN we would have a fantastic cure for many diseases.

The problem of stem cell research is how the cells are obtained. Umbilical cord blood is a good source of stem cells! Those cells are destined for the trash can. They cannot and will never become a human being. Unfortunately, most stem cells are obtained by ABORTING a living human being, commonly called a "fetus".

A "fetus" is more than a collection of stem cells. This is a human person at a certain point of growth, albeit a very dependent stage. This person has a heartbeat, brainwaves, finger and toe-prints, functioning organs, their own gender, and their own blood type (that can be different from the parent types!). How is this a "potential" human being? Why should it be legal to slaughter him or her, to harvest certain cells for research?

If stem cells could be obtained by simply picking our noses, then there would be NO opposition to their harvest. However, the "preferred" method of stem-cell harvest seems to be to take a tiny living human being, and run them through a food processor.

Yet, the death penalty is considered "cruel and unusual punishment" and is protested by liberals all over the country.

Rapists and murderers get protests and appeals. Unborn children get sent to a food processor, and then a centrifuge.

I really don't get that.

No, stem cell research does not, everyone was misled by the media rush over it.

The cells used were already deceased from natural causes, not from aborted fetuses.

I think stem cell research can put all those aborted babies to good use. if no one is going to be able to keep their fetus they will always be important for the advancement of cures for disease. That's pretty important and would save millions of lives.

Good point.

One thing is for sure, potentially life saving research is being hindered, in this country, by idiotic religious dogma. That is infuriating!

I'm sure you realize how ridiculous that question is.
Unless you honestly think you can get someone pregnant with your boogers....
