There are a variety of reasons. The baby's father is equally responsible for the birth of the baby. The single mom might need a break once in a while and not have any family around to care for the infant. Child support from the father may be dependent upon the father having the child once in a while.
Just because the man and woman did not get married doesn't mean the baby's father doesn't care about the child.

Well, why do people always assume that the mother should take care of the child? Or the Mother should get custody. I am not downing women but The mother isnt always the best choice for raising the child. Its the most responsible PARENT. Plus the mother was not the only one who contributed to giving the child life. The other person, ya know, the FATHER, helped a little.

A father should look after their own child the child wasn't born of immaculate conception. But FYI I was a single mom 12 yrs am very highly educated and I took care of her all on my own. But it took both of them to conceive the child so the father should have to look after the baby too..Do you ask this because your bf has a baby by another girl and the girl feels the father needs to watch the baby if so get over yourself its his responsibility

Depends on her circumstances, maybe she just isn't physically, financially, or mentally stable to take care of the child and the father is, or she is just a lazy *****.
Personally I don't see the problem with men raising their kids, it should be no different from a single mother raising her own, we need more men like that in this world!

Permanently? Once in a while? I read the question as posed, I did not assume sole custody was given to the father, though that may have been the poser's intent. Regardless, nearly all children benefit from having their biological father in their life. Research shows that in most situations, kids do better with their own parents, however "terrible" the conditions seem to others, than in foster care! That's why it takes so much to get kids removed. I am a single mother, and I love my kids more than I need to be "right" or "better" or in any other competition with their dad. Love is doing what is right for the other person, not what is best for my emotions. As parents, we have a responsibility in ALL situations to do what is best for the kids, not for our bruised egos and emotions. It is better for my kids to have their dad in their life, and that is the bottom line. In some cases, it might be better for the Dad to have sole custody, just as it might be in other cases for Mom to have sole custody. But most cases, the kids need time to maintain as healthy a relationship as possible with BOTH parents.

As a mother you have to make tough decisions, if your child would be better off with the father why not let the child be with him? I was raised by my dad, but not because my mother couldn't support me, my dad sued for custody out of revenge.

Its his kid too maybe shes considerate of his wanting to help or be in the childs life. Or if its only the dad raising the kid it could be due to drugs money or a judges ruling. Many things go into divorced or seperated parents trying to raise kids.

i think that you should take the guy to court and ask for him to give you child support and tell the judge whatever it takes to do get child support and if he dont and only give you like a check of some sort copy it then take him to court again

well most of the time no! it's really hard to raise kids alone and if he is responsible enough than yes he should watch them sometimes. and the kids deserve to know their father and have him be in their life as long as he is not a criminal or anything like that and he treats the kids well.
