Unless it is in your house and needs to get out, DON'T.

It is illegal to keep/capture/own a wild bird.

Nathan, I live in Australia too...I hate to tell you most birds are protected and 99% of the birds here cannot be taken from the wild, IT IS ILLEGAL and therefore if you get caught, you will be looking at $5000 max and/or 12 months gaol. I am no activist, but if people believed taking birds from the wild was a good idea, Aussie birds would be screwed. Please do the right thing and stop telling people it's ok to take from the wild and stop being such a cheap bastard and buy what you need off a breeder or petshop. GROW A BRAIN MATE, LOL

Do you realize that it is a Federal crime to possess a wild bird? Its a violation of the Federal Migratory Bird Act. If you were caught it would be a minimum of a heavy duty fine. There are plenty of domestic birds that make good pets. Don't even consider having a wild bird.

Only reason I can think of for catching a wild bird is it's injured, and you want to save it's life. Not a task for the average bird lover. If the bird in question is injured, it should be pretty easy to capture. Immediately call you're local Wildlife Association, they'll come out and take it off your hands and care for it properly.

If the bird in question is healthy one. Please leave it alone. Most birds have a mate waiting back at the nest, possibly with eggs or chicks to care for. They have cats taking them away from their families, people don't need to jump on the bandwagon.

Catching a wild bird would be illegal. There are laws against that and would result in you being fined heavily if you were caught. Why not acquire a bird from a pet store, breeder, or the humane society.

Unless the bird is hurt and you intend to catch it and rehabilitate it, you should not be trying to catch birds in the wild. If you did catch one, it would probably die of stress or something similar. Also it is illegal my dear.. I thought I would attach this below for your reading..

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) says a recent fine imposed on a man for trapping native birds, should serve as a reminder that capturing birds from the wild is illegal.

DEC Director of North-West said the fine was handed down by Local Court after an investigation by DEC officers.

"In this case the man was found to have traps and cages in which four mallee-ringneck parrots were contained."

"Our officers saw some of the birds flying frantically into the walls of his aviary, consistent with the behaviour of recently-captured wild birds."

"The man was fined for offences under the National Parks and Wildlife Act of harming protected fauna and possessing protected fauna."

"Taking native birds from the wild is illegal and the size of this fine should show others that the penalties are severe."

"Our native birds are having a hard enough time with habitat loss and predation by feral cats and foxes, without the added pressure of trapping."

I'm not trying to sound mean but if there isn't one in your house or stuck somewhere then leave them in the wild -- they are there for a reason.
