1. travel less by plane
2. insulate your home
3. Consumption habits are probably responsible for more pollution than anything else. Think about it: even buying bananas involves clearing of the land for the tree; use of pesticides on the fruit; transportation of the fruit; packaging of the bunch; and transport to the supermarket. That's a whole lot of pollution, and that's just for food, let alone those little luxuries like a new pair of shoes!
To be greener, you can, then: eat locally produced organic food, and basically buy less stuff, though personally, as a bit of a clothes horse myself, I've found a wealth of gorgeous second hand wear in cool markets (like Camden or Portobello in London). You can also get together with friends to trade clothes you are sick of or that don't fit any more, or even buy amazing used designer clothes on ebay. Sure, they have to be transported, but at least the manufacturing process has been finished!

Cheryl M's answer above is excellent - this is a bit repetitive but there are a couple of points I'd like to add.

1. Make sure your attic has 200mm of insulation, that your cavity walls are insulated and you have double glazing. Set your thermostat to 18 or 19C depending on what you can hack.

2. Buy local food from small shops - they don't shift food around the country as much as the big stores.

3. Eat less meat (I should practice this myself but don't).

4. Vote along environmental lines.

5. Avoid 'anti-bacterial' products containing substances such as triclosan.

6. Buy energy efficient goods (all white goods, lightbulbs and some others have A-G ratings)

Well there's doing everyday things like switching off all the plugs when you don't need them! (amount of times I've seen plugs on when they're not needed) Also don't leave your telly on standby! When you do get into a car with a big group try and use least amout of cars possible! Don't smoke! Buy beauty products from the body shop (commosion please he he only joking!) As I'm typing, I'm sure someone's already written this down and made me look v silly enjoy!

buy recycled products
reuse as much as you can as often as you can
minimise vehicular transport as much as possible
buy local foods to avoid air miles in transport
reduce energy usage in the house by turning things off or insulating etc
try to use 'clean' energy from wind/solar power
compost food waste
plant trees/plants

encourage others around you to do as much of this as well to make more of a difference
