I doubt it. I also doubt that a dog with an amputated leg would be able to breed, but I don't know. There is a certain way they have to walk and everything, and of course a three legged dog would not be able to walk with the proper gait. Also, I'm pretty sure show dogs are not allowed to be altered in any way, considering they can't be fixed. I kind of wonder if they wouldn't consider an amputation an "altering" of the physical appearance of the dog.

I disagree with Melissa's answer who wrote that "she'll leave puppies for those with small hearts". Opening your home to any animal, whether young or old; from a shelter, breeder or even the street; healthy or ill, requires an enormous amount of love, patience, dedication and commitment. Too often people buy an animal for Christmas or Easter, only to have it at a shelter a few months to a few years later. These people, IMO, are the ones with small hearts. They view animals as disposable - something that's great when it conveniences them. But for me, if you care for an animal until the Good Lord takes him/her away, then that's not a sign of a "small heart" at all.
As for the question at hand - I'd say it depends on the dog. If the dog has adapted quite readily to his missing limb (and many do) and is otherwise very healthy, friendly and accepting of my other animals, then I see no problems adopting a 3-legged pet.

I had a good friend who had a three legged dog that they rescued. They loved that dog so much and it got around almost better than it's 4 legged friends!
If I liked the dog and felt that it really needed the chance, I'd go for it. Especially if he's healthy otherwise. Why not? I'd never be embarrassed by the dog, I'd hold my head up high that I saved the life of a dog that someone else threw away.

I would probably adopt the 3-legged dog. I've actually seen a 3-legged dog that is more active than a 4-legged dog. It's amazing how they adapt to just having 3 legs. Its as if they never lost a leg.

don't worry if u decide to walk away the person behind you will adopt that dog, dogs are different than people they actually do very good with 3 legs and do not have a sociological trauma coz they lost one limb but people do .. i work in an animal hospital and i saw many cases of dogs with 3 legs they are very happy and they can do many things as dogs with 4 legs except they will not gonna be able to scratch when they gonna have a flea bite with the missing leg

i would walk away.however i do not and would not adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue.i buy purebred dogs from breeders.had 2 mutts when i was a kid and loved them but my true love is for the largest breeds.(mastiffs and great danes)in those breeds they come with many health problems so i buy top of the line dogs.i also love labs but i am a duck hunter so it can't be a mutt either.labs tend to have hip problems so i get top of the line labs as well.if one of my dogs was to lose a leg i would keep it.my dogs are my best friends so i would not let something like that stand in the way of my love for them.i am glad there are people out there like you.i'm just not one of them.

I would get the dog with the amputated leg because not alot of people want those kinds of dogs and any dog can be a great companion as well as a friend.

I would go with the 3 legged dog if it fit my lifestyle, and we got along well together. I have seen dogs with 3 legs, and some of those guys can run faster than dogs with 4 legs. Plus you have to give them credit cause they can figure out how to do things that are much harder with only 3 legs. We had a 3 legged dog who wanted to badly to dig like the others.. The day she figured out how to dig a hole was a great day for her, she was so pleased with herself... It brought a tear to your eye watching her conquer those things that the others took for granted. BUT do not ever feel sorry for her cause she would have none of that at all... As far as she was concerned, she was just as good, if not better than a 4 legged dog!

I would consider it if it were the right dog for me in other respects (personality, breed, size etc.). It wouldn't keep from doing it.
I adopted a cat with part of his ear missing. He is a great cat with a wonderful personality and the ear adds to his charm. I'd feel the same way about an amputee that was the right dog for me in other respects.
I'm not perfect, so why should I expect my animals to be?

A three legged dog is just as good as a four legged dog. Take them home and love them for all their worth. Shelter dogs need a forever loving home.
