I am reletively new to car audio and I was just wondering what the difference between SQ and SPL was. I am looking for some subs to put in my Grand Am that provide some serious glass breaking bass, but still sound good while doing it. I am considering Oz Audio, but idk...any suggestions here would be helpful also. Thanks

SQ is sound quality. how good the woofer sounds. with a SQ woofer expect to bass to be tight, clear, and crisp. they can get pretty loud, and most can get volumes that satisfy the average joe.

SPL is Sound Pressure Level. or overall total loudness. expect a SPL sub to be ground shacking bass. but dont expect it to sound all that great. there usually very sloppy, and bad for music with real insturments, not a bass line. this sub is for people who just want to turn heads, show off, or are serious about bass competitions.

i'm a SQ guy. i listen to mainly rock, and some country. i rarly listen to rap, or anything with a bass line. lucky for me my older brother was a SPL guy. but after a while you'll find that bass gets old. there is more to music then just bass. so i guess you grow out of it.

i've never heard a OZ sub, so i cant tell you what i think about them. however here are some brands that i highly recomend you looking into before you make a purchase.

Boston Acoustics- i own 2 of there G5 subwoofers and to date i am yet to hear a better sub. these 2 are plenty loud for me, and when i do run a bass test its hard to breeth in the car. so enough SPL to make me happy, but the SQ imo is second to none.

Diamond Audio- also a SQ brand, these woofers sound great. there D9 woofer is louder then my woofer(s) but they dont sound as good, but there sure as hell dont sound bad either.

Infinity Perfect- Infinity is the brand, Perfect is the woofer. a very very good SQ woofer. not very loud though. however if your on a budget, there very hard to beat for what you pay for.

Pioneer Premier- Definatly more the SPL side of things. these woofers are built solid from top to bottom. if you really really want the most bass possible look into there 5000SPL. loudest woofer on the planet and unlike any other sub, it has the world records to prove it.

Image Dynamics- These woofers are some of the lowest woofers you'll come across. they'll produce lower bass then you can hear. why is that cool? cause you can still feel it. I'd put these subs in the SPL catergory, but there SQ really isnt too bad. these subs may be the ones for you.

RE Audio- no doubt a SPL woofer. these woofers are very loud, but there not cheap either. they will definatly give you that glass shattering bass your looking for, but i doubt they'll give you the SQ your looking for.

TC Sounds- i've never heard a TC sounds sub. however i know a lot of people that say there really great subs. there x-mas for the price is 2nd to none. definatly something to check out. only place i have ever seen them for sale is www.tcsounds.com

JL Audio- i normally do not recomend this brand. they make pretty good stuff, but most people think its the best of the best. most people are wrong. i dont recomend them too often cause there really overpriced. howeve if you can find a deal on a w3, or w6 pick it up. a lot of people say the w7, but i'm not a huge fan. its a good overall woofer, but not for $900.

good luck to you sir, and dont just get stuck on one brand. go out into the world and explore. dont waise your time at Best Buy and Circut City. you wont be happy with anything you buy from either place. go to private shops, call around, and listen to eveything you can. take your own cd with songs your know how there suppose to sound when you demo stuff. good luck man, hope this helps.

Spl Subwoofers

SPL subs usually have a high Fs (hz). This is because it is easier to get high SPL at a higher frequency. SQ subs usually have a low Fs, because they go lower. QTS is usually an indicater of what kind of an enclosure a sub is partial to. (.7) Qts means the sub should go in a sealed enclosure. A sealed enclosure is thought to be the "smoothest" type. It doesn't have a hard roll-off on the upper or lower end of the frequency response.

The size of the structure can also be a consideration. As with anything, the bigger it is, the harder it is to control. SQ subs will usually not have huge magnet and voice coil structres or extreme excursion (cone travel).

Some good subs that combine SQ and SPL are OZ (as you stated), Diamond Audio (D9), Treo (TSi), and JL Audio (W6V2)

A sound quality driver has higher expectations placed upon it because it is made of better sounding materials and is expected to help make us believe in a higher authority when installed in the right box with the proper power. When consumers and dealers search for a SPL driver they would readily accept a woofer with a cone made of recycled aluminum cans and used hypodermic needles if it had a large enough motor structure and was LOUD. Ask yourself what defines a SPL woofer; is it cosmetics, shipping weight, chrome, 16 spiders, giant belt buckle bending motors, or output. Hope this is helpful.

SQ= Sound Quality. U get more of the multiple sounds in your music.
SPL= Sound Presseure Level. These go really loud and give a slighty lesser musical quality.
but there are many other factors you should consider when starting your system.
