I'd get this checked professionally if you've had an operation. Sometimes an odour can indicate an underlying infection, but not always.

In order to treat bad breath, ideally you need to know the cause - it can be anything to do with what you've eaten, a periodontal condition, plaque bacteria and so on. The best thing to do first off is sort out your oral hygiene.

Change your toothbrush every three months, as the bristles splay and become ineffective and the brush harbours bacteria. Make sure you also use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from your tongue, and some kind of interdental aid. In order to recommend one that would be ideal for you, I'd need to examine you, but for just for yourself, pop down to your local Boots/Superdrug/Tesco/Asda and get yourself some "Tepe" brushes. (put tepe into a search engine to find out more)
These are like little bottle brushes to clean in between the teeth and come in different sizes. You'll have to try and judge the most appropriate size for you: they come in eight different sizes and are colour coded. I'd recommend you start with the pink ones, as these are the smallest and the easiest to get the hang of, and will also give you a better indication later as to whether or not you need a bigger size when you've got the hang of it.
Put the brush in between the teeth back and forth, using all of the brush. Do this a few times in between each tooth and work your way around your mouth top and bottom. Keep a tissue handy to wipe off plaque that you remove. It's important not to force the brush through so that you dont cause any damage. Ideally, do this twice a day. You don't typically need to do it after brushing; although this is a good time, its not always practical. I have several patients who are more than happy to sit and watch television with a hand mirror and poke around with their Tepe's.

Also use a good mouthwash twice a day. If you want to check what your mouth smells like, the most accurate indication is to lick the back of your hand using as much of your tongue as possible. Wait a few seconds and smell it. It sounds disgusting but it works!
Be careful what foods you eat, avoid anything with a strong odour, and theres no harm in popping your toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste in a little bag and taking it with you whilst your out during the day.

I hope it works out, and I do recommend you get a doc to have a quick check to make sure theres nothing related to your tumour causing any bad smells.

This will heal your mouth (infection is the cause of the smell)
and heal the pain.

Get a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide at the drug store (it is usually on the bottom shelf next to the rubbing alcohol). It is quite inexpensive, about 1.00 for a quart.

Swish several times a day and brush your teeth with it also.
Swish for 30 seconds to a minute it will foam the infection and junk out of your gums and heal them.

My Dentist had me start this many years ago when I got strep.

I will never know why people do not know about this simple solution to mouth problems.

Good Luck.

brush your tongue and gargle mouth wash. Depending on where your tumor is you might end up with a pocket in your oropharanx that food can get caught in and rot and give odor as well. Finally what you eat can also leave bad breath.
