Not sure if this is what you are looking for but here is my 2 cents worth....

Trace quantities of certain elements (e.g., iron or manganese) in the crystal can cause wide variations in colour among examples of the same mineral.

Hardness is dependent upon the crystal structure.

The internal bonding in minerals will determine the fractures or cleavage.
