If there's anyone who deserves health care/medicare for free, it's our retired vets/policemen/firemen. They keep us safe.

The big problem with VA claims is that there is a _huge_ backlog of claims. Also many claims wind up getting denied because the person making the claim never followed through and filled out all of the required forms.

If somebody is going to put in a claim they should talk to a Veterans Service Officer from the VFW or DAV _first_!

Philip (Above),

You bring up a very valid point to which I suggest the "mythical service claim" should be punishable to the fullest extent of the law to include several hours duty assisting the truly injured in our Vet facilities. Though some mythical claims are simply impossible to prove as "mythical."

That being said, we need to do things at the community level as well.

My husband never saw combat, but when he got out of the Navy and had to get re-established in civilian world, I can't tell you the kindness that was extended to us when people found out he was former Navy.

People gave us amazing deals on a storage container for our personal belongings 'til we could find a place to live. We got into an apartment with little money down and first month's rent free. People just wanted to shake his hand for goodness sake and it made us feel so appreciated.

Our military who has seen combat deserve that and MORE! A whole lot more. We need to step up to the plate and realize that we are in this battle together and the more support we can offer from our end, the stronger they will be able to be at their end.

The OUTPATIENT care building 18 at Walter Reed doesn't really represent the majority of VA facilities. I think that there is way too much "red tape" in the way of getting treated, but that been like that for decades. The guys I know that had to be treated at Reed were given excellent care.
The TriCare system that is used is great. My wife has never had problems with it. I wish they would institute TriCare for returning veterans so that they could seek private healthcare for lesser injuries and needed surgery...but I feel that alot of the government would be better if privatized.

There are many, many "veterans" that defraud the government for mythical service related injuries or false claims of PTSD. These people are taking time, money and other resources that legitimately belong to those that rightly deserve them; REAL war wounded, those with REAL service connected disabilities, and retirees. Sorry to point this ugly fact out but it is a fact many "veterans" (not all) have been using the VA system for years.

Well, I am a Veteran. Maybe, that makes all the difference but I support the VFW, sponsor two soldiers in the Treats for Troops program and have volunteered at the USO. It doesn't tak a lot to support our forces. Maybe just go to your airport and cheer them as they get off the planes from overseas?

I can't see why they wouldn't need that kind of care. After all they go through I think they should have the best care to offer. It's only right. When you think about it it's not like they get paid allot like some other jobs pay.
