Your child's teachers actually do not want homework to be a power struggle or to take up your entire evening.

Our school tells us our job as parents is to provide the time, the place and the materials. The child needs to be responsible for the rest.

Set a specific time each day that is to be devoted to homework. Make sure your child has all the materials needed and set a timer. When the timer goes off, take the work away. If they didn't finish it, then they face the consequences at school. The teacher is the person the child is responsible for reguarding homework. This is their first time to be responsible for something to someone outside their home. Let them have ownership of that responsibility. If they don't complete it, they face the consequences at school. Obviously, if it is difficult and they need help, answer their questions.

A good rule of thumb is that homework should take about 10 minutes per year of school. So a 3rd grader should have 30 minutes worth of work per night. I would allow 2x whatever it is supposed to take (so 1 hour for a 3rd grader) and then put it away for the night.

umm it depends on their age...my parents did this with me and now I do my homework as soon as I get home even though the rules are no longer enforced. When I first started school I had to do my homework and hour and half after I got home. If i didn't I wasn't alowed to leave the ktichen until it was done. When I got into upper elementry, I could do homework when ever I wanted but it had to be done. If I missed more then one every three weeks I lost a priviliage (phone, tv, computer, w/e) for the next 2 days and could have it back the day after as long as all my homework was done, (even the stuff I missed) so like say I missed 3 and my mom found out on Monday i would lose something for Tuesday and Wednesday and get it back on Thursday as long as all the homework was done, (and checked) and I would usually get it back when I was supposed to beause not having the distractions let me have more time for homework. In middle school and now that I am in high school, it is totally up to me if I want to do it or not, my parents say its my desicion, but if I miss alot of them and fail a class, i lose something until the next interm or report card is mailed out or until i show that my grade is passing..(in my house a 73 and above is passing)..and that works for me and now sometimes i forget a homework, but I make sure I do the rest of my homework for the week so it doesn't make to much of a difference in my grade. (Also, I wasn't punished for forgetting my homework at home, as long as it wasn't more then once every 2 weeks, or if I had a hectic night before.) Hope I helped

I gave my girls (7 and 9) a timer. It's a regular kitchen timer. It is a digital one, not the kind that ticks. ( the ticking kind was more of a distraction) They set the timer for 15 minutes and work on homework, then they get to take a break for 15 mins. They will do this until they are finished. I also make sure that they get a good healthy snack before they start. I also make sure that they have a quite area to work.

My kids have never started a fight over homework, so I would say routine. They know when they walk in the door it is homework time, then when they finish they can play.

lol, sometimes you can sometimes it's impossible. My kids know that as soon as they get home their homework gets done. No buts about it. They don't have a choice. Once they learn that their not going to get out of it they will do it without a fight, maybe not happily but it will get done. Good luck

Simple....let them make the decision....

Here's how we used to do it. We always knew when my son had homework, there was always a note from the teacher. This was with all the kids....not just my son. So, when he came home, he was asked to do his homework. If he didn't do it....ok. After dinner....asked again....if he didn't do it....ok. The next day when he had no homework done, he got an F for each one he didn't do. For each F....he lost the video games for a week. So....5 homeworks MISSED....5 weeks...no video games.

It was amazing to watch him excel after that......

hum thats a tough one. An age old problem with so many answers but so few that actually work. It's different with every child. My key was sports. Or should I say my achieles heel. The good thing is every child has one you just have to find it. My oldest was working with me and mechanics, my middle one a daughter was the phone and outings. and believe it or not my youngest is going to church. He's keeping A's and B's just to continue to go to church and boy scouts. Hell I'd do my homework and my brothers just to stay in my sports, but that was me and that was many moons ago.

Take away their privileges: TV, Phone, IPod, Computer (unless it is for their homework). No going out with their friends. It is hard but stick to the punishment, because you know once you let them get away with it once they will count on it again.

Make a deal. If you don't do homework, you probably fail a test, so tell them that. Then tell them that everytime they bring home a passed test, they get a certain amount of money.

there will always be a fight to get their homework done, but just don't let them go out or any other privilege until it is done and stick to it. make it a daily routine.
