Staff NCOs train second and first lieutenants in OCS and the Basic school. Leading and training are what NCOs do.

I hear you. All of the officers (O-3 and above) that I knew were tough, experienced, intelligent soldiers. They "pushed papers" only when *military tradition* required it; they hated meetings and paperwork, and coveted the military field operations opportunities. During my eight years of enlisted service (with a college degree) in the Army, I continually saw the benefit of secondary education (with military experience) in training. Had I chosen to make a career in the Army, I would have done the Green to Gold (enlisted to officer) program.

I support assigning captains and majors (O-3 and O-4, respectively, have from 6 -10 years of experience) as DI's for both officers and enlisted. Even an officer is a soldier first. If anything, experienced NCO's should be assigned to lead the recruits, not as DI's but as platoon and company operational leaders executing the instructions of the DI's and subject to the same consequences as the new recruits.

As a Marine NCO, I and my peers were convinced the most dangerous thing in the Marine Corp, was a 2nd Lt. with a loaded .45 . You want to put young Marine wannabes in their hands ? You gotta be out of your ever lovin mind !

A 2nd John is not much different than a recruit fresh out of boot camp, except he might have a year or two more education, other than that, his blood is the same color red.

Any lieutenant who's worth his salt in combat, will stay close to his senior NCO's. These are the real warriors, these are the guys with the instincts to stay alive. These are the people who can lead people. Those young lieutenants can and will learn from these people, if they will only listen !

Absolutely not!!!

NCO's are the trainers and leaders in the military while officers are the planners and paper-pushers.

You cannot replace an NCO with 8+ years of experience with a 2LT right out of college. WTF does he know about leadership? At no point in the Marine Corps or Army do you find officers as skill instructors...that is the role of the NCO, who has the experience and expertise.

The reason they use Sergeants is they have the experience and know what it takes to be a Marine in the trenches. Except for a few prior enlisted, Second and First Lt's just don't have the experience needed to know what it takes. Who do you think they use to put the Second Lt's through their boot camp? Drill Sergeants.

I'm Navy, but I think I know what I would want if I was going through Paris Island. I want someone pushing me that's been there and done that.

First and Second Lieutenants don't have the experience to teach new recruits how to be Marines. They are barely Marines themselves. That is why you have NCO's with years of experience under their belts train the newbies.

Your out of your mind. My husband was 14 years Army. NCO's are the core of the military. Officers are used more or less for upper management. Drill Sgt. need to be tough, the "abuse" that you refer to is designed to get you ready for combat stress. Soft shoeing through it would make weak soldiers who would collapse under fire, and that's not who I would want defending my country.

I disagree entirely. A Lieutenant who's been in for a year doesn't have anywhere near the knowledge of a Staff Sergeant who's been in four 6 years. If you don't have experience you can't train effectively.

An officer is supposed to removed from the enlisted soldiers he commands. This is done so that he can better make decisions in battle. So, no it is not an officers place to train.

NCOs and Flag Officers (Generals and Admirals) run the military. If you're not one of those, you're still in training.
