I don't know where kelli gets her info but all the volunteers I know do it because they love helping. I volunteer at the local animal shelter 6 to 10 hours per week. It's a loving job for me cause I love all animals. I do the feeding, cleaning and the best part...........the petting. But it does break my heart to know that all these loving animals won't find a good home. To me it is a shame to see God's creatures have to endure not having a home. I have no animals of my own because I believe that animals should be left alone and free. But they are here and we have to do what we can to make their lives more bearable, at least for a while. BTW. this is for defender. God bless you and all those who volunteer.

Most places give you a paper to fill out. You have to get parent permission if you are a minor at a certain age. Also it will ask you whether or not you want to do certain jobs and what times you will be available. If you are volunteering because you want to help, they will work with you, so you can come in and work when you have time.

I work around 50 hours a week (full time, obviously) with an Americorps program called City Year doing literacy tutoring and an after school program at an inner city school in Chicago. And I organize and participate in random community service once or twice every couple of weeks.
