an elderiy relative a CVA(stroke)and now has difficulty moving his right arm, and he also has speech problems. what areas of the brian were damaged by the stroke?

The lesion is somewhere along the Left Middle Cerebral Artery in the motor cortex, probably in the temporal and/or parietal lobe/s of the brain. The lesion should show up on a CT scan of the brain about a week after the stroke.
Speech therapy is very helpful for the restoration of communicative competence. Occupational therapy is good for the return of arm function, grooming, dressing, bathing, and household activities. Physical therapy is for balance and locomotion. Be sure the doctor has ordered all three; intervention is the best way to assure progress.

I believe it would be the left side of his brain.
Our bodies are opposite of our functions. The right side is run by the left side of the brain and
the left side is control by right side of the brain.
