I rented a car and went to NY. Parked apparenlty 3 inches closer to a fire hydrant than I was suppose to (sarcasm) and was given a $115 parking ticket. I had to idea that you had to be 8 feet away and the person in front wasn't anywhere near 8 feet away as well. I was approximately 5-6 feet away. Is there anyway to get around this? shouldn't something be posted so people who visit know these rules? I love New York and usually just walk everywhere when I visit ... since the car wasn't even mine will they go through the motions to track me down?

You ask since the car wasn't yours will they go through the motions to track you down.

I can tell you from personal experience what will happen, they will go to the License Plate Number, then they will trace it back to the rental company who will then take and put the Parking ticket on the Credit Card number from you that they have on file.

As far as should something be posted so visitors know the rules, you are right in as much as it sure would be nice , unfortunately the old adage "Ignorance of the law is no excuse" comes into play here. (Sorry for this to be such a negative answer, but these are the facts.)

Just chalk it up to experience, all in all at least the car wasn't TOWED! Wouldn't THAT have been horrible!?!

You are supposed to be 15 feet from a hydrant, thats why you got the ticket, you werent even close. And yes, they will go through all the motiions...first they'll track down the rental car place and they will track you down. And as a side note, everytime they have to do a step to track you down its adds 35 dollars to the fine....So I would just pay the bill sooner than later.

In the US its a minimum of 10 feet - the curbs are usually marked with red paint to let you know that.
You may try to fight it - if you got a picture of the curb and there was no red paint to mark the distance.

If not- just pay the ticket -

Yes they will and that car you rented, you left a credit card number right? They will just take your credit card number and pay it. (The company you rented the car from) It's in the fine print under all damages or neglected or over site bill con -currently while rented under your care at given time!
Happen to me!
