I adopted a stray female cat about 8 years ago. She was very skittish and fearful at first, so I have taken extra care to create a loving, secure home. She's very affectionate, loves attention and over the years has become much more secure. Several months ago, some neighbohood cats started stopping by my patio to apparently visit with my cat, who sits and looks out the french door. It appeared that the cats were stray, so I began to feed them. My cat doesn't like this, but seems to have adjusted. One of the cats is a sweet little female who is very people-friendly. My cat gets very upset if I show this cat too much attention. Occasionally, she has slipped inside when I open the door and my cat goes nuts. A few times my cat, unable to get to the other cat, has attacked me. I eventually had to establish dominance with her, which I don't like to do. Do you think she could adjust to the new cat if I adopt her and bring her inside? Or do some cats just need to be an "only cat"?

Most will adjust given time and patience but there are a few, especially torties, that don't do well with other cats. And age can make a difference too, if they are older sometimes they are set in their ways and will not be friends but just put up with them.
If you are going to get another cat/kitten then I would suggest getting some Feliway to help alleviate any stress and add some Rescue Remedy to their water for added help to keep them calm during the transaction.
Keep them seperate and introduce them slowly; put the new one in a carrier, spray with Feliway first, and let them get used to each others smell. After a while, depending on how they act let them get to know each other. But feed them together, in seperate dishes, and play with them together.
That helps to make things more relaxed and comfortable.

Cats usually just need time to adjust to each other. They may fight and all for a while but after a week or so it should be ok. If you deicde to try and keep the stray, I would recomend getting her checked for feline leukemia first. If she has it and scratches or even licks your cat then it can very easily spread.

I think you have answered your own question. This adoption is a sure "no-go". Perhaps you have a friend or co-worker who would welcome this sweet young kitty into their home.

Your cat sounds like an "only" and you know that in your heart. Enjoy her.

its up to your cat if she feels uncomfortable with it dont she has "territory" over your house being the first cat there and will not enjoy sharing it with another.

they will adjust. they'll have to just make sure you give them both the same amount of affection.
