A simple coat of ceiling paint is cheaper and will save you time in the long run. Honestly, if you are considering doing this, I wouldn't. Popcorn ceilings are way outdated and it's such a mess to work with and clean up. I watch a lot of House Hunters and they always comment on the popcorn ceilings and how unattractive they are. There are other approaches to texturized ceilings. Check Home Depot or Lowes for ideas...they have tons! Good luck with your new project!

Generally a "popcorn" ceiling is less expensive, when installed in a new home. The drywall doesn't need to be finished well because the texture spray hides the imperfections. Finishing drywall on a ceiling well takes skill where as spraying popcorn not near as much. The cost difference is more in the wall finishing. Not many people are requesting popcorn ceilings these days if you are considering it, it could lessen the value of your home on resale.
If your ceiling is finished and painted now and want a texture, careful what you pick it is a personal taste a subtle texture may be OK but "popcorn" is considered dated. As a secondary finish it would be more than just painting. The newer textures require painting in addition to the texture.

Way too expensive - it will sap your house of value. Avoid popcorn ceiling like the plague.
Just use a trowel to give a random, flat design to your ceiling. Not noticeable, but it someone were to look, it has a artsy feel instead of a budget feel.

Popcorn ceiling is more expensive because of the plaster that you have to use to get the effect. Anymore people are doing away with them and going to the plain smooth surface ceiling. Believe me I watch a lot of TLC and HGTV of flipping houses and they say they aren't in style.
I have this style of ceiling in my house and HATE it but don't want to take the time to redo them. But it's more or less just your personal style.
But I would have to say that if you want to save money to just go with painting your ceilings. It will be much easier and save you time & money. Sorry couldn't be more help on the subject

IT COST MORE TO PUT UP THE POP CORN CEILING ,ALSO YOU WILL REGRET GETTING A POPCORN CEILING IF YOU GET ONE,BECAUSE YOU CANT JUST PAINT IT WHEN IT NEEDS IT!PLUS POP CORN CEILINGS ARE VERY OUT OF DATE.AND IT ALWAYS GETS DAMAMGED SOME HOW AND YOU CAN NEVER MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THE REST WHEN REPAIRING IT!
